Pupils race Olympic sprinter at launch of Surrey's PE and multisports coaching service

Thirty ten year-olds were the first pupils to enjoy all sorts of sports activities, including a race against ex-Olympian sprinter Todd Bennett, at the launch of a new PE and multisports coaching service for Surrey's schools. Multisports4schools has been developed to give every pupil the opportunity to enjoy great results in physical education, by giving the county’s primary and secondary schools access to a network of qualified coaches.

The pupils, from Ravenscote Community Junior School in Camberley, took part in athletics, netball, cricket and tennis sessions and then had a question and answer session with Todd. Each child received a certificate, which was handed out at school assembly.

Andy Baker, Head of Sport at Multisports4schools, said: "Sport in schools is changing and it was great to see a high level of coaching taking place and the children both learning and having fun. Good coaching is about balancing skill learning with playing the game or activity and it was great that this was taking place, especially in the Ruggerbeez sessions. Schools demand high quality, irrespective of whether it’s a PE lesson or a specific sports club after school. Multisports4schools offers this and also introduces professional development courses for teachers who still enjoy PE and sport in their schools."

By giving primary and secondary schools easier and more affordable access to a network of flexible, qualified coaches, Multisports4schools offers consistent PE delivery. With a greater emphasis on competition as well as learning, its coaches teach pupils the skills they need to develop understanding and ability in a variety of sports and become competitive against each other, and other schools. As well as placing coaches in schools, multisports4schools, part of the Eteach Group, offers professional development for coaches, teachers and teaching assistants through a partnership with teacher training universities, ensuring schools are equipped to deliver high quality PE, multisport and multiskill to their pupils.
