Netherhall School and Sixth Form College

Netherhall School and Sixth Form College

The Netherhall School is a co-educational comprehensive school of 1480 pupils, and is the only maintained 11-18 school in Cambridge.

The present Netherhall School was formed in 1974 by the amalgamation of the Grammar School for boys and the neighbouring Netherhall Secondary Modern School for Boys and Girls. The new comprehensive school retained the Grammar School's A-level Sixth Form thus ensuring that it provides a full and balanced education from 11 to 18.

Location and Facilities

The school is ideally situated in the southern outskirts of the City, surrounded by over 55 acres of playing fields with open country beyond. The buildings, which are modern and spacious, are on a split-site campus. This permits a two-tier organisation with the younger pupils (Years 7 to 9 inclusive) in the Lower School and the older pupils - including a large Sixth Form - in the Upper School. The teaching staff of over eighty serve the entire school.

The school has recently enjoyed a major rebuilding programme, providing many up-to-date buildings and facilities of very high quality. These include libraries, laboratories, workshops, and well equipped art, music and drama studios. The school is recognised nationally and indeed internationally for its pioneering work in Information Technology. It has a leased-line Internet connection with full filtering service supporting over 150 computers on its network. It has four 20-computer network rooms and four clusters of 15-20 computers in subject areas. Offices and libraries are also connected to the network, all with Internet access.

The Sixth Form Centre has its own courtyard, surrounded by a spacious Common Room, seminar rooms and direct access to its own area of the library.

The school has excellent facilities for sport and recreation; it is well provided with playing fields on site; it has a large Sports Hall, two gymnasia, six tennis courts, five netball courts, six outdoor cricket nets, an artificial cricket wicket and a heated outdoor swimming pool. Altogether it is a school of very attractive appearance, purpose-built for education into the 21st century.
