Frodsham School, a Science and Technology College
Frodsham College is situated in the small Cheshire town of Frodsham.
The college is a popular choice, with September 2002 intake over subscribed, and many students travel considerable distances to attend Frodsham. Commitment to the college from parents and students is high. The ability range of students reflects a normal distribution with some very able and some disadvantaged children. Approximately 70% are out of zone students and 17% are in receipt of free college meals.
The college is committed to providing the best possible opportunities for the education and personal and social development of all its students. Its students achieve a wide range of academic and other successes. These have included Oxbridge places, national and international sporting achievements, GCSE, GNVQ and 'A' level results consistently at or above County and National averages. In the past the college came among the top twenty comprehensives for 'A' level results and GNVQ results are regularly outstanding. The college has just become a specialist technology college and is entering an exciting phase of development.
The academic organisation of the college is based on Departments. All Lower School students follow a range of National Curriculum subjects and in the Senior School all students continue to follow a balanced curriculum from a broad range of options. Science is taught as an integrated subject to GCSE level with the option of three separate sciences if there is sufficient demand and a range of 'A' level and GNVQ courses are provided in the 6th Form. As a technology college Frodsham intends to expand opportunities in the technological area but also intends to raise the profile of music and drama, so that students have a fully rounded experience whilst in college. Currently there is single sex teaching in Years 7, 8 and 9 except in Drama, PSHE and RE.
The pastoral organisation of the college is based on a House System, with the Head of House assessing development from year 7 - 11. A Positive Learning Scheme operates. Year 5 and 6 students from the local primary schools are invited to be taught on site in the primary base. The Modern Foreign Language Departgment organises regular trips abroad.
TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE STATUS
We have been successful in obtaining Specialist Status as a Technology College. We aim to maintain and develop a whole college technological culture which values high attainment in all subjects but particularly in mathematics, science and technology. An application has been made to admit some of our students on aptitude in mathematics, science and technology. Our status will have benefits for all subject areas and will help the college retain its position as a popular choice for parents.
Recently, we underwent a successful OFSTED inspection.
