Bridgewater School

Founded in 1950 by parents, Bridgewater is a non-denominational, selective independent 3-18 school for girls and boys. The governors, staff and students share a sense of excitement about our school and its future. Its motto is Sic Donec which we now render as “so far, so good”. This sums up a great deal about the school: our emphasis on taking pleasure in what we achieve ; our philosophy of encouraging our students to strive for their personal best in all areas of life; and our commitment to improving what we do on a gradual basis.

Our school has a delightful, semi-rural setting. It has a distinctive “black and white” façade, behind which sit our well resourced and modern classrooms. There is a continuous programme of building and development. In recent years we have improved the sixth form common room, prep school ICT facilities and our sporting facilities by adding an astroturf surface.

We are a family school where students have the advantage of being able to stay right through to the sixth form, from 3-18. The whole school is united under The Headmistress and, as her deputy is also the Head of the Preparatory Department, there is an unusual cohesion to the school yet the prep and senior departments retain their own distinctive character.

There is a history of close partnership between staff and parents in order to promote academic ambition, high standards of behaviour and a sense of community. We are also fortunate to have a thriving PTA. By encouraging close communication between staff and parents, we keep small issues from becoming large ones. To assist this, there are regular formal parents meetings, reports and newsletters.

Our students come from far a field as well as from the local area. Our wide catchment area is served by school buses as well as a good road and motorway network. Our population is diverse socially and culturally.

In the last two years the reputation of the school has spread and due to our popularity we are now a three form entry in years 7 and 8. However, Bridgewater is by conviction and design not a large school and will preserve its smaller classes, intimate atmosphere and attention to the individual.
