The school was established in 1976 and caters for pupils with severe and profound learning difficulties. Some of the pupils have additional needs such as Autistic Spectrum Disorders ao Physical or Sensory Difficulties. Pen-y-cwm school is on the same site as Beaufort Hill Primary school with which it has very good links. Pen-y-cwm school has ia highly effective Outreach Service. The school has a very good reputation in the community and is held in high regard by the parents. Currently there are 70 pupils on roll.
