Avenue Primary School
Avenue Primary School is situated in Manor Park, East London. The Infant and Junior schools were amalgamated in 1992. The original school buildings were built in 1974 and a large extension was opened in September 04. The extension provides: 7 classrooms; a large staff room; a hygiene room; a library; a room for meetings and training and a very large ICT suite. There is an office for the Deputy Head on the second floor of the extension. Refurbishment of the existing buildings has also been carried out to improve toilets in the school and the school entrance. We have recently created a small ICT suite for Key Stage 1 and a Resource Centre. There is a separate Nursery Unit and at the rear of the site is a very large field and play area.
The Nursery Unit takes children from the age of approximately 3 years. Placements are for half a day, although full day placements are sometimes made to meet the educational needs of specific children. There are two classes in each session, each has a capacity for 52 children.
The school is a three-form entry: 21 classes. The standard number for the school is 90. The school roll is estimated at around 550 maximum. There are no classes of more than 30 pupils. The school population is mainly from the catchment area of the school, with between 85 and 90% being bi-lingual. There are at least 30 different languages spoken in the school. The majority of pupils are from families in the Bengali speaking community. The school has a strong EMA team, which provides in-class support. There are some families living in temporary accommodation and this coupled with other reasons for movement means that the school has approximately 25% unplanned admissions throughout the school year.
