Furtherwick Park is one of three comprehensives serving Canvey Island in south Essex. We are all foundation schools of similar size and take pupils 11-16. The ‘Canvey Partnership’ provides close links between all Canvey schools, both secondary and primary. Headteachers meet regularly and we have a number of shared projects and events. Pupils from the primary schools choose freely between the secondaries: there are no rigid catchment areas.Pupils from all three schools choose from a number of options post-16, the most popular being SEEVIC Sixth Form College in Benfleet, our partner sixth form. The School also has an active partnership with Chelmer Valley High School in Chelmsford, is part of a LIG consortium and has partner schools across Europe through three Comenius projects. We are also participants in DfES ‘pathfinder’ and ‘innovations unit’ projects.Canvey is a mainly residential area of 44,000 surrounded by fields and bordering the Thames Estuary. Housing is predominantly private and covers a wide price range. The school itself is situated in the town, fronting the small shopping centre. The community is a close and stable one: Canvey Islanders are very proud of their community. The school itself has a staff of approximately 45 teachers and an equal number of support staff. We are ahead of many schools in implementing the workforce reforms, and take our responsibilities in this seriously. All teachers have laptops, and have access to our wireless network. We run an extensive induction programme for new staff and are committed to giving opportunities for further career development. Many of our staff came as NQTs or GTPs, have qualified and stayed or found promoted posts. The school has twice been accredited an ‘Investor in People’.Furtherwick Park is a non-smoking site, but we do have staff who smoke – they will advise you of their “special arrangements”.The current Headteacher has been in post since September 2002. After several years of falling GCSE results, summer 2003 saw an improvement from 29% to 42% 5+ A*-C. 5+ A*-G was 96% and an outstanding 99% of all pupils achieved GCSE qualifications. At KS3 achievement was up in all subjects, of particular note in English, where the proportion of pupils achieving level 5 and above rose from 49% to 72%. Attendance has also improved. On the sports field Furtherwick Park has a reputation for excellence: our pupils are deeply committed to sporting success and achieve it at both local and national level. A number of pupils have played for their country and are national and even world champions in their chosen fields.
