What is an Academy?

Academies are state funded schools which have been established to help improve education standards by replacing failing schools. An academy can be set up through sponsors from businesses, charities, local authorities or voluntary groups working in partnership with the Department for Education (DfE). Since opening, the Academy has more than tripled its examination results at GCSE with 76% of students achieving five or more A* - C grades in August 2010 and 76.2% of Sixth Formers achieving A*-C.
