Academies are state funded schools which were originally established to help improve standards in struggling education authorities by replacing failing schools. Traditionally, an Academy can be set up through sponsors from businesses, charities, local authorities or voluntary groups who are working in partnership with the DCSF. Academies are not maintained by local authorities but do work closely with them as well as with other local schools in the area.
Academies are part of a long term strategy to raise standards and improve education in disadvantaged and challenged areas. Innovative approaches to management, governance, teaching and the curriculum will be introduced in a bid to improve the quality of the school in question. A broad and balanced curriculum as well as good teaching and excellent facilities will be offered to all pupils regardless of their abilities.
As well as delivering improvements in educational standards, academies can help disadvantaged students through the use of a pupil premium. This is a sum of money which comes from outside the existing schools’ budget and can be used to provide help to students in disadvantaged circumstances.
