Parkgate Primary School is situated on the northern outskirts of Coventry. It serves an area of mainly private housing, the majority of which is owner occupied, although there is some rented accommodation. 35% of the children have family backgrounds of ethnic minority origin. The school is housed in 1 main single storey building with an additional block housing 3 classes and a separate purpose built nursery building which caters for 78 children on a part time basis. Outdoor classroom are being developed. There are 21 classrooms, a food technology area, two ICT suites, two halls and two dining rooms. Every classroom is well equipped and has an OHP and screen (except Yr R and Yr 1 rooms). There is a brand new computer, with e-mail and Internet access, situated in the staff room for use by staff. We also have a well-equipped resources room and an excellent resources manager, who is also responsible for supporting staff with their reprographic needs. The school is set in extensive grounds which are used to enhance the curriculum and to provide a pleasant environment for the children. We are in the process of developing the grounds further with the help of the school fundraising group. The school has a well-developed fenced in pond area with a decked viewing platform and picnic benches. Seating and tables for 30 children have been set near the year 5/6 playground. There is also a nature walk, a large playing field marked with two football pitches, another pathway flanked by a variety of trees and an ancient hedge. The school aims to provide a happy and secure environment where learning will be pleasurable and effective. It also aims to develop self-respect, self-confidence, self-reliability, motivation and initiative among all pupils. In order to achieve this the school is committed to recognising children’s positive qualities and attributes, to providing equality of opportunity and to actively involving parents in the life of the school. There is a School Council and several after-school activities and clubs are provided to extend the children’s experiences. The school has a collegiate style of management, building consensus and empowering others. Teamwork is the key to the school's effectiveness and success. We have recently been awarded 'Investors in People' status. We consider professional development to be very important and encourage all staff to take advantage of training and advancement opportunities. We have an excellent record for supporting newly qualified teachers and providing a very positive induction year. The school has 2 non-class based deputies. This enables co-ordinators to have non-contact time to carry out their responsibilities or for teachers to bid for time to complete specific tasks. All staff are valued and support is always available on a non-judgemental basis. Every Reception and Key Stage 1 class has a teaching assistant and there is a teaching assistant for each year group in Key Stage 2. There is also additional teaching assistant support for specific special educational needs. We are in the process of setting up a nurture group under the auspices of the Access Initiative and we are all very excited about this latest development. The school underwent an Ofsted inspection in May ‘98. The friendly, caring ethos of the school and strong teamwork were both highlighted in the report. Since that time the school has gone from strength to strength with many exciting new developments and processes being put into place to move the school forward and raise standards. Our motto is ‘Aiming for Excellence’ which we regard as applying to us all in all areas of school life.
