Although the majority of students are Roman Catholic, the Governors are always pleased to receive applications from parents of other faith denominations who are seeking a Christian-based education for their sons or daughters. The School aims to create a caring, stimulating and happy environment in which young people of all levels of intellectual and physical ability are given the guidance and encouragement to develop their individual skills, talents and personal qualities to the full. The School demands and obtains high standards of academic achievement, effort and behaviour: homework is expected of all students. In January 2006 St Anselm's was invited to join the "Most improved club of Specialist Schools" following an unprecedented rise in GCSE results.Curriculum provision is broad, balanced and appropriate to individual needs. Children are set according to ability in Mathematics, English, Science, Humanities and Modern Languages. A full range of established courses leading to GCSE is offered and all students in Year 11 are expected to enter for at least nine GCSE examinations. Sixth Form provision is also extensive with a broad range of GCSE ‘A’ level and GNVQ (Advanced) courses on offer. Additional Sixth Form course options include 1 year GNVQ Intermediate Courses in Business and in Health & Social Care which prepare students for employment, or for progression to Advanced GNVQ courses.St Anselm’s has a very pleasant site that contains an excellent range of facilities which includes well equipped specialist suites for Science, Information Technology, Design Technology, Consumer Technology, Art & Design, Music and Drama. In very recent years, two science laboratories, two general teaching rooms, an additional music room and a further textile room have been added. A new Sports Hall opened in January 2006.Religious education is taught to all students throughout the school and our approach is specifically Catholic. The spiritual dimension of the religious education programme is further enhanced by the experience we offer in the form of celebrations of the Eucharist for the school community on holydays, class liturgies and retreats. Each year group has a Chaplain and the work of the Chaplains greatly enhances the pastoral system within the school. The orderly atmosphere of the School and a well-structured pastoral system enables close caring relationships to be built to support all students. We place great emphasis on offering a broad range of opportunities and encouraging students to become actively involved in their own learning. Beyond the classroom students excel on the sports field, where distinctions are achieved at local, county and national levels, and in music and drama. A musical and a school play are produced each year, and singers and instrumentalists achieve semi-professional standards in choral and orchestral groups and through regular public performance. In addition, there are opportunities to travel at home and abroad enriching the pupils’ experience. We are always pleased to show prospective parents and students around the school. Please write, email or telephone (01227) 826200 for further information.Large open campus to the south of Canterbury with views over the town and cathedral.
