Ninestiles School & Academy

Ninestiles is a nine-form entry, mixed comprehensive technology college with over 1450 students on roll, about 150 being in the sixth form. Its provision includes an LA designated unit for 45 students with speech and moderate learning difficulties. The school has been oversubscribed for the last seven years and received more than1000 applications for the September 2006 intake of 270 students.

The school is situated in the Acocks Green area of Birmingham, close to the city’s southern boundary with Solihull. Most students come from Acocks Green, Hall Green and Sparkhill, with small numbers from other communities. 37% of students are from the ethnic minorities. The area overall is disadvantaged and has some pockets of severe disadvantage. 30% of students are entitled to a free school meal. Key points to note are:

* Behaviour for Learning (BFL) was piloted in May 1994 and has been in operation since September 1994. Its success has brought the school many visitors wishing to learn about its impact.

* The school gained technology college status from 1st September 1997 and in the previous year ranked seventh on the list of most improved schools over a five year period in terms of GCSE results.

* Ninestiles became a foundation school in September 1999.

* We have a relatively new sixth form with around 150 students being taught A/AS level and vocational advanced and intermediate courses.

* Ninestiles is a Leading Edge school and is also the lead partner in a federation with the Central Technology College, Gloucester.

* The campus is the biggest dual use site in Birmingham with excellent sporting facilities including a swimming pool, all weather pitch, squash courts and playing fields.

* There are currently over 100 full time teachers. The curriculum is delivered through ten faculties: English, mathematics, science, PE, performing arts (music and drama), modern languages, art design & technology, information technology/business studies, humanities and learning support.

* ICT is a major feature of the school and student access to ICT has always been a priority for the school. We have increased our provision in line with our move to deliver 21st Century Learning.

* The school uses the Balanced Scorecard for its development and improvement planning. All members of staff are able to take part in the construction of the scorecard. Faculties are moving towards using it.

* Our most recent Ofsted report described the school as “a highly effective and improving school with outstnding capacity to improve.” .

* In 2006, our GCSE 5A* - C results were 83% our best ever. Staff are committed, hardworking and talented: morale is high.
