We are proud of the extensive range of opportunities to stimulate and enhance the growth of our students into mature and responsible adults with a sense of purpose.

As Principal I have extremely high standards and expectations of myself, the staff and the students. This involves all aspects of school life from effort, work-rate and ethos to conduct, behaviour and good manners. Under my leadership, there will be a strong focus on establishing the right climate for learning within school and an emphasis on fundamental elements of learning and achievement. This positive and caring learning environment based on mutual trust and respect and, with the support of parents and the community will lead to a true partnership that supports our students, your children.

There will be an increased focus on implementing a consistency of approach with the school’s existing core values of mutual respect, equality and opportunity for all and a determination for every young person to realise their potential within a caring environment.

Our success is based on an ethos designed to address individual needs, foster self-esteem and self-belief and meet society’s changing expectations.

Under my leadership this school will always be fully inclusive and put the students at the very centre of all that we do.

We are constantly on the lookout for outstanding opportunities to enhance our curriculum and are tenacious in developing the learning experience for our students. Our trailblazing work for NHS England has to some amazing opportunities for our students such as SmartGym Gloucestershire that seek to explore the value of combining physical and cognitive exercises to help build young people’s mental resilience.

In September 2020 the National Cyber Security Centre (part of GCHQ) made us a Gold Standard school for Cyber Security. This prestigious award is built on the success of our ground-breaking work as a CyberHub School and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to Cyber Security Education. The safety and cyber safety of our students in our digitally connected world is paramount and the opportunities available for young people in this rapidly expanding sector are endless. About Us

History and Heritage

The Newent Grammar School was founded in 1925 and was cited at the crossroads in the building that is now the Community Centre. On 1st April 1965 Newent School was founded and moved into Gloucestershire’s first purpose built comprehensive school on our current site. We welcomed hundreds of previous students back to our 50th Anniversary Celebration in April 2015.

The layout of the school is dominated by the spacious Main Hall, equipped with stage lighting and sound system. There is a continuous programme of refurbishment and improvement to ensure up to date facilities in specialist areas.

In recent years we have completed ESFA funded projects including the refurbishment of the School’s kitchen and Meet n Eat facility, the replacement of windows to majority of the buildings, new perimeter fencing and a comprehensive CCTV systems that covers the entire site.

In 2017 we undertook work on a capital investment of c £1million which included building a new Sixth Form Centre. Students joining our Sixth Form in September 2018 were the first to benefit from this new facility.

In addition, students in 2018 were the first to use our state of the art industry-standard catering learning facility following our successful bid to The Savoy Educational Trust

Instead we offer an incredible range of opportunities which enables young people to enhance their natural talents, gifts and abilities. We constantly strive to ensure that all our students are supported to be the articulate, tolerant, resilient and caring young people who will go into the world beyond Newent as lifelong learners capable of achieving great things and making a difference.

2019 Results

GCSE Results 2019

We are delighted to announce another excellent year of results and progress from students at Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre.

80% of students achieved grades 4+ (A*-C equivalent) in GCSE English and 74% achieved grades 4+ in Maths. Over 12% of all grades achieved by our students were either a grade 9-7 (A*-A equivalent). These excellent results are mirrored in many of the subjects in our wonderfully broad curriculum.

We are exceptionally proud of the students for performing well in these new more challenging GCSEs, with the majority of subjects now graded on a new numerical 1-9 grading system.

Our students have made excellent progress from their KS2 starting points. Superb results were achieved by many students in the traditional, academic subjects that make up the English Baccalaureate as well as in our vibrant practical, creative and performing arts departments.

The overwhelming majority achieved the grades they required to take the next step in their lives, whether that be studying A levels with us at Newent, attending college, taking up an Apprenticeship or entering the world of work.

Within this global success there have been many individual performances worthy of special mention. Many students have made extraordinary progress since joining Newent Community School and have achieved the remarkable outcomes listed below:

• Sarah Bilsby achieved five grade 9s, four grade 8s and one grade 7

• Isobel Balmer achieved four grade 9s, four grade 8s, one grade 7 and one grade 5

• Helen Davis achieved two grade 9s, six grade 8s and two grade 7s

• Isobel Dinic achieved two grade 9s, two grade 8s and six grade 7s

The first photograph is of Amelia Hookway-Jones, Alana Spedding, Phoebe Bonser and Lois Feld jumping for joy! The other photograph is of Poppy Jones and Anisha Rasul with Mrs Williams (English teacher). Both girls each achieved a Grade 9 and 8 in their English exams.

We are committed to ensuring that all students achieve their full potential demonstrating high standards in all aspects of their school life from effort, work rate and ethos to conduct, behaviour and good manners.

We strive to develop confident, informed and caring young adults who have self-belief and participate in their local, national and international communities; the school provides a wealth of opportunities for students to achieve these aims.

Principal, Alan Johnson, said: “Our values as an inclusive community school where there are no limits on what can be achieved are reflected in these fantastic examination results. We are absolutely delighted with our GCSE results and are all immensely proud of our students’ achievements. The hard work of our students and teachers has been rewarded and these stunning results that will enable our students to move on to their A-level courses at our sixth form with confidence and pride in their ability and potential. I would like to thank all our wonderful staff for their hard work and dedication and also thank our parents and carers for their ongoing support for our school.”

A Level Results Summer 2019

Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre is pleased to announce that 2019 has been another successful year for our Year 13 students with a 92 % pass rate at A Level as well as in a range of other courses available at the school in the Sixth Form.

Our A* - E performance also saw a 5% increase on performance from last year. We are very pleased with all our students performing exceptionally well against targets based on their prior attainment.

Our top performers this year included Felicity Beach-Thomas who will study International Relations with Language at Cardiff University following her impressive A* A A B grades. Elisabeth James who has secured her place at York University to study Mathematics, after achieving A* A B C. Lydia Kelly is also congratulated for securing her place in Leeds to study Law following her A* A B C grades.

We are extremely proud of Caitlin Nolan (our Head Girl) and Lewis Mitchell (our Head Boy), who, in addition to studying 4 A levels, also completed the EPQ qualification. Caitlin, who achieved A A B C and A* for her EPQ will be studying towards her Masters degree in Neuroscience at Nottingham University. Lewis, who gained A B C D and a B for his EPQ will study Financial Mathematics at Aberystwyth University also securing a Merit Scholarship. Both Caitlin and Lewis were key members of the crew involved in our Beauty and the Beast production in February.

There are many other individual success stories, too many to mention them all. Lily Meecham and Natalie Girard are two of a growing number of students taking up apprenticeships and have secured places in the NHS. Other very successful A level students include Ruby Sacklyn who achieved A A B and who will travel in her gap year prior to embarking on a potential Midwifery course at university.

It has been an excellent year at Newent and needless to say we are very proud of our all of our students, and we wish them every success as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.

Everyone at Newent is committed to ensuring that all students achieve their full potential demonstrating high standards in all aspects of their school life from effort, work rate and ethos to conduct, behaviour and good manners. We strive to develop confident, informed and caring young adults who have self-belief and participate in their local, national and international communities; the school provides a wealth of opportunities for students to achieve these aims.
