Overview

The Sherwood School is an ‘Inner London’ school, serving a culturally diverse community in Mitcham with happy, confident and polite children. We aim to promote the well-being and safety of children and to ensure they are offered the best opportunities that we can provide. We were graded as ‘Good’ in our most recent OFSTED inspection in November 2017 and our work to develop children’s emotional well-being was noted as an asset of the school: ‘The school’s work to support pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is effective and a strength of the school.’

About Us

We are committed to delivering the best education for all our pupils, centred around our Rights Respecting ethos and expressive arts curriculum. Our motto ‘Inspire, Learn, Grow’ was suggested by children when asked to sum up what happens at The Sherwood and how they feel about their learning here. We are a happy school where children enjoy learning and achieving in the context of a rich, vibrant, broad and balanced curriculum. This has also been acknowledged in our recent Ofsted report: ‘The curriculum is well organised to stimulate pupils’ learning in a range of subjects. Pupils told inspectors that they enjoy learning different subjects.’

Teachers at The Sherwood use a range of methods and strategies to ensure that all children have the opportunity to learn and to develop as independent thinkers. This includes using the Maths Mastery approach, teaching through a themed curriculum that uses stimulating texts to immerse children in their learning. We aim to develop children’s knowledge, skills and vocabulary through a wide range of strategies, including drama, debate, information research and practical ‘hands-on’ tasks. We also provide a range of additional opportunities to enrich children’s learning, through our links with the wider community.

We believe in encouraging positive working relationships amongst our staff, families and community. The school works closely with The Ark, a pre-school facility that runs on the school site and Pioneer Sports Academy who provide a wrap-around facility delivering our breakfast and after school club.

Working for Us

We are interested in meeting applicants with a true interest in all children and a passion for creating a warm, professional and supportive environment for our children and families. You should be motivated, well-organised, approachable, able to work with others as well as independently and keen to contribute to the wider life of the school.
