From West Sussex to Thailand: A glimpse into International Teaching
Moving into international teaching is a life-changing decision, full of excitement and opportunity. In August 2018, Paul and Erin Willis relocated from West Sussex to Thailand with their family—and they have no regrets about embracing life in Southeast Asia.
Their story showcases the rewards of teaching abroad—cultural enrichment, career growth, and a dream lifestyle. If you’re considering the move, their journey may inspire your next step.
Their adventure took them to leading schools first in Bangkok, and then in Phuket.
Erin, formally a teacher of biology in an FE College, has thrived in her roles in Southeast Asia. She told Eteach, “I wanted a new adventure and to experience a different culture. As a parent of two young girls at the time, I also wanted to get a better education for my children.
“The transition from life in England to life in Thailand was good. Our quality of life in Thailand is great and we did not find we had problems with the cultural differences.
“I did find that there were differences regarding teaching. There is more respect for teachers in Thailand from both parents and students. Behaviour is a lot better, and the schools are better funded.
“Teaching students who have English as a second language has helped me find ways to challenge my techniques and improve them where needed. I've also had many more training opportunities which have had a positive impact on my work in the classroom. I'm more aware now of cultural differences that could impede my students’ progress".
“There is not much that I miss about life in England, but I do miss my friends there. When coming to Asia you must embrace a totally different culture.
“My advice is to thoroughly research the school you are interested in working at. Get to know it ‘on paper’ and aim to choose a good fit for you. If you want to travel, teaching in Asia is a wonderful opportunity!”
Erin’s husband, Paul, was made redundant from his role at the local council in England. This encouraged him and Erin to think outside the box about what steps to take next in their lives. He told Eteach: “Making the move to Thailand was remarkably easy. We were helped by a great community at the school we moved to and very friendly local staff.
“I am not a teacher, but I worked as a science technician in Bangkok and as a boarding parent in our current school. Although my job is vastly different from the job I was doing back in England, I miss remarkably little, except family and friends.
“My advice to anyone considering living and working in Asia would be to go for it.”
“I think teachers are hugely respected in Asia. The standard of living in Thailand is extremely good and teachers ought to be able to save money, depending on how extravagantly you want to live your life. The possibilities of travel are almost endless!”
Paul and Erin’s journey proves the life-changing opportunities of international teaching—from career growth to cultural enrichment and an incredible lifestyle abroad. Finding the right role can be daunting, but Eteach makes the transition seamless, connecting educators with top schools across the globe.
