– Secondary schools’ job advertising up 14%
Data released by eteach.com shows that 36% more teachers are using their mobile phone to look for their next job than they were last year; while tablet use has dropped 20%.
Paul Howells, ex-teacher and CEO of the job board Eteach.com comments: “This illustrates how important it is that schools embrace the simple technology available to them and mobile optimise their adverts and career sites now. It’s critical that as much as possible of the application is easily accessed online. It’s difficult enough already for teachers to move schools – so quite simply, if you make it easy, you will catch the talent. Job hunting teachers are understandably choosing the path of least resistance.”
The education job board’s quarter 1 index also revealed that recruitment for teachers of music (-20%) and art (-19%) have dropped year on year, reflecting the worrying trend of schools having to cut arts and humanities to make ends meet. Overall, secondary schools are advertising 14% more, with maths, English and science teacher jobs taking up the top three spots respectively. A disproportionately high 7% of all teaching roles were for maths teachers, confirming the continuing shortage.
Vacancies posted for Classroom Assistants (TAs) have increased by a marginal 5% since last year, and each job had a high rate of interest at an average 574 views. This indicates that schools still need the classroom support and that the role is still of interest.
