Commercial Livestock Weekend Technician
(Part-time, Permanent, All year around)
The College is seeking to appoint a Commercial Livestock Weekend Technician to help support the College’s livestock department at weekends and on bank holidays.
The successful applicant will be responsible for the daily husbandry, record keeping and care of the animals housed in the ‘Commercial livestock’ unit. You will be expected to have experience of working with a range of domestic species such as poultry, goats, pigs, sheep and cattle.
You will be required to assist the Livestock Manager with the commercial sheep flock (including lambing) and beef herd, so experience of working with large numbers of sheep and beef is also necessary. This role will also include the need to use and maintain BCA vehicles and machinery as and when necessary to complete tasks safely, such as checking animals, feeding bales and cleaning out large animal accommodation.
The key responsibilities of the role are developing and maintaining the highest standards of husbandry and animal welfare as well as the direct supervision of students during their practical sessions and skills development.
As livestock technician you will be expected to have proven knowledge and experience of working with a range of agricultural species and experience of working with young people. You must have a forward thinking and progressive approach to animal welfare and husbandry.
The role may also involve representing the college at agricultural shows, showing stock.
