The Governors wish to appoint a school cleaner to help maintain the school building, ensuring high standards of cleanliness and health and safety. The successful applicant will carry out cleaning duties around the school building during the school day. In particular, the role will involve cleaning up student areas following break and lunch times, ensuring that all areas are tidy, clean and safe for all to use.

St Mary’s is a wonderful school to work in and this is an excellent opportunity for someone wishing to join a supportive and caring school community. The working hours would provide a great opportunity for anyone working around family commitments or wishing to take on additional work.

The successful applicant must have an excellent work ethic, be able to work well independently and be able to carry out cleaning duties to a high standard. It is important that the candidate has good communication skills and is always professional. It is essential that any applicant enjoys interacting with young people and other colleagues and can do this effectively. As a Catholic school, the successful candidate must also be prepared to actively support our Catholic/Christian ethos and key values.

There are more details regarding key responsibilities in the Job Description. The role is a fixed term role for 1 year initially, and there is the possibility of the role being extended or becoming a permanent position. There also may be a possibility of extra hours working in the school and therefore flexibility would be desirable.

St Mary’s is a very popular school, rated Outstanding by the Diocese and Ofsted. We are an inclusive, ambitious and nurturing school where students thrive. We enjoy outstanding facilities in a building, which opened in 2011. We joined the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust in June 2020. We are also very popular with parents and are one of the most over-subscribed schools in the North-East. The roll has grown from around 1100 five years ago to over 1450 by September 2025, with 5 main school year groups of around 235-240 and a Sixth Form of approximately 300 students.

If you require any further information about the post or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Danielle Largue, Deputy Headteacher.

Closing date: 9.00am on Friday 30th January 2026. Interviews are likely to be held shortly after this date.

The school is fully committed to safeguarding and the welfare of children and young people. This post is subject to an enhanced DBS check and an online search for shortlisted candidates, as part of our due diligence.

Safeguarding Statement:

St Mary's Catholic School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

In accordance with the safeguarding vulnerable groups’ regime [2006] & the relevant Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSiE) DfE guidance, any offer of employment made will be conditional upon the results of checks from the Disclosure & Barring Service (“the DBS”) and Teacher Services (regarding teacher prohibition/disqualification from working with children and young people).

School roles give privileged access to vulnerable groups, therefore, we require all applicants attending interview to disclose all spent convictions and cautions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exemptions) Order 1975 unless it is a “protected” conviction/caution under the amendments made to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exemptions) Order 1975 (in 2013) and, therefore, not subject to disclosure.
