ADVERT

Teacher of Science and Maths

Full-time and 1 Year Fixed Term

Main or Upper Pay Range

Required from September 2026

The Governors wish to appoint an excellent Teacher of Science and Maths for this fixed term post. This post is full-time and should appeal to both recently qualified teachers or to more experienced candidates, looking to develop further in an outstanding school.

This is a wonderful opportunity for someone wishing to join outstanding departments and a highly successful school. The role will provide much professional development for the successful candidate and unstinting support will be given. If you would like to discuss this post further, please do not hesitate to contact Danielle Largue, Deputy Headteacher.

St Mary’s is a great place to work and provides excellent job satisfaction, as it is a very supportive environment. We provide excellent CPD for ECTs and recently qualified teachers, as well as on-going training for more experienced teachers. There are opportunities for teachers at all levels to help develop teaching and learning across the school, working collaboratively with teachers from other departments, whether as coaches or researchers. The working environment is, therefore, a very stimulating one for all staff and is an added attraction of this post.

St Mary’s is a very popular school, rated Outstanding by the Diocese and Ofsted. We enjoy outstanding facilities in a building, which opened in 2011. We joined the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust in June 2020. We are also very popular with parents and are one of the most over-subscribed schools in the North-East. The roll has grown from around 1100 five years ago to over 1450 by September 2025, with 5 main school year groups of around 235-240 and a Sixth Form of approximately 300 students. We expect the Sixth Form to continue to grow in the next couple of years, as strongly academic year groups continue to move into the Sixth Form.

At St Mary’s, Science and Maths are well-established and highly respected departments with exceptional results. Recent highlights include:-

Maths

• 71% Grade 5+ and 86% Grade 4+ in GCSE Maths in 2025

• Average Maths grade in the top 3 in the North East in 2025

• Progress scores for GCSE Maths averaging +0.43 over the last 3 years

• A Level Maths achieved 71% A*-B grades in 2025, with 86% A*-C

• Both A Level Maths and A Level Further Maths average over 50% A* and A grades over the last 4 years

Science

• Over 75% of GCSE Physics pupils achieved a Grade 7 or higher across the last 4 years, with 100% at Grade 5+

• 67% of pupils achieved at least 2 Grade 5’s in Science GCSE’s over the last 4 years, compared with 47% nationally.

• GCSE Science has a Value Added score consistently ranked in the top 5 schools in the North East.

• 33% of A Level Physics students achieved an A* or A over the last 4 years, with 58% A*-B – well above the national average

Leadership, teaching and the climate for learning in Science and Maths are all outstanding, as they are across the school.

Above all, the Governors wish to appoint a leader with:-

• A clear commitment to nurturing and promoting the school’s distinctive ethos

• A passion for providing the best possible holistic education for all students

• A commitment to maximising achievement through excellence in teaching and learning

• An excellent track record as a classroom teacher

• The ability to promote a love of learning English in our students

Closing date: 9.00am on Monday 4th May 2026. Interviews will take place shortly after the deadline.
