Cotham School, a successful, vibrant and diverse 11-18 comprehensive school, wishes to appoint an experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to develop and deliver resources, interventions and programmes to support students’ writing skills to rapidly improve their literacy proficiency.

The successful applicant will have the necessary knowledge, skills and vision to plan, deliver and evaluate impactful interventions to support students’ literacy, specifically focusing on foundational writing skills for students who are working below the expected level for their age across KS3 and KS4. We strongly believe that literacy is a gateway skill to allow all students to fully access the curriculum: to be able to demonstrate their learning as well as express their own opinions. We are proud to be an inclusive and aspirational school and the new writing intervention programme is a key component to ensuring that all students meet their full potential academically and are prepared for the world beyond school.

You will work in close liaison with colleagues, other agencies and parents to support the creation of co-ordinated approaches that support individual students’ progress in developing their literacy and writing; monitoring the effectiveness of interventions and supporting colleagues in their implementation. The school is well-equipped with a range of successful resources, strategies, platforms and processes for reading, oracy and EAL interventions and we welcome applications from candidates who can contribute to new and developing Writing Strategy as part of our weirder literacy team. This is a great first-level teaching support post: many of our previous successful applicants have gone on to gain teaching qualifications and further qualifications in teaching literacy and delivering EAL intervention.

We offer:

  • The opportunity to join a hugely successful and oversubscribed school.
  • A wonderfully diverse student body.
  • A highly cohesive, experienced and high-performing Senior Leadership Team.
  • A committed and enthusiastic staff group.
  • Excellent opportunities for personal and professional development.

  • Ongoing learning and development opportunities and access to the school CPD library.
  • At least 5 inset (training) days per annum with the provision of free onsite drinks and meals including the opportunity to work flexibly from home on some of these days.
  • Comprehensive induction process.
  • Competitive salaries which are reviewed annually.

  • Access to staff sports - yoga sessions and team sports are currently available.
  • Option to participate in the cycle to work scheme.
