This is a fantastic and rare opportunity for a dynamic individual to join the team at our supportive, popular and friendly school. We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic LEARNING SUPPORT ASSISTANT to work closely with the Year 5&6 team to support the learning of individuals, small groups or the whole class under the direction of the class teacher. The ideal candidate will also have experience of successfully teaching whole classes, based on pre-prepared planning, without the teacher in the room. The successful candidate will have at least 3 years experience of working in a school environment and evidence of significant expertise and/or experience in an area of SEND. Whatever your experience, as a school, we are committed to providing support in order for you to continue to develop into a highly effective LSA.

The role requires the candidate to have the following:

The ability to effectively support children with differing needs in the classroom.

Experience of working in KS2.

Care, adaptability, foresight, humour, resilience and initiative.

Good interpersonal skills to communicate with Class Teachers, LSAs, SENCo and Parents/Carers.

The ability to provide a positive and encouraging learning environment.

Strategies to refocus children back toward learning through positive behaviour strategies.

The ability to lead high-quality interventions (focussing on English) to support needs.

St John’s is a very happy, successful and popular school, near the top of Whiteladies Road and close to the Downs. We now operate over two sites but remain very much one school. We already have an outstanding team of highly dedicated, experienced and hardworking staff and the successful applicant will enjoy and develop professionally by working alongside colleagues. Please read our recent OFSTED report for more details of our excellent practice.

We pride ourselves on being a caring and high achieving organisation both for our pupils and our staff. We are seeking to recruit an exceptional individual who can develop excellent relationships with children and staff and is dedicated to enabling the highest standards of achievement for all pupils. We need a person who is adaptable, who can work on their own initiative and who is caring, patient and able to work collaboratively with a very supportive team.

We offer the successful candidates a fun and friendly team, the pleasure of working with our fantastic pupils and a community committed to supporting and developing all its staff to be the best that they can be. The role would initially be in Year 5&6. We aim to keep staff working within one of our year group teams (made up of 4 classes) but your on-going deployment will be determined on a needs basis. Most support will be within the classroom but you may also lead 1:1 or small group English based interventions.

Visits to the school are encouraged and will ideally take place at 4pm on Thursday 5th November 2026 please contact the School Office on 0117- 9030251.

Please read the job description and person specification carefully. CVs will not be accepted and all application forms must be completed in full. Please state clearly why you are suitable for this role. All appointments are subject to an enhanced DBS check, medical checks and references.

Closing Date: Noon Friday 13th November

Interviews: Tuesday 24th November
