An opportunity to promote students’ welfare, engagement and achievement, helping them to overcome barriers to learning and secure a positive school experience.

Bristol Brunel Academy is seeking a committed and resilient Pastoral Support Officer to join the academy team. This role plays a central part in promoting students' welfare, engagement and achievement, helping young people to overcome barriers to learning and supporting them to thrive both academically and personally.

As a Pastoral Support Officer, you will be a key point of contact for a designated cohort of students and their families, supporting their welfare, behaviour, attendance and overall academy experience. You will establish positive and effective relationships with students on both a one-to-one and group basis, delivering targeted pastoral support, mentoring and interventions that promote social, emotional and academic success. Working closely with pastoral leaders, teaching staff, parents/carers and external agencies, you will identify emerging needs, coordinate appropriate support and help remove barriers to learning.

You will monitor and track attendance, punctuality, behaviour and wellbeing, implementing timely interventions in line with academy policies and procedures. You will contribute to the consistent application of the academy's behaviour policy, support positive behaviour management and respond appropriately to pastoral, safeguarding and child protection concerns. You will also undertake home visits where required to support attendance and safeguarding objectives.

The role includes maintaining accurate and confidential records, monitoring and analysing student information using academy systems, and contributing to the delivery of small-group and individual interventions both within and beyond the classroom. As an integral member of the pastoral team, you will support the academy's behaviour systems, including undertaking on-call duties and supervising designated student spaces as required. You may also deputise for other members of the pastoral team when necessary.

About you

You will be:

  • Passionate about working with children and young people, with a genuine commitment to improving students' life chances and supporting them to achieve their full potential.
  • Emotionally resilient, calm and able to remain professional and effective when working under pressure and managing challenging situations.
  • A confident relationship-builder, able to establish positive and productive working relationships with students, families, colleagues and external agencies.
  • An excellent communicator with strong written and verbal skills and the ability to communicate sensitively and professionally with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Committed to promoting equality, diversity, inclusion, safeguarding and the wellbeing of all students.
  • Organised and proactive, with the ability to manage competing priorities and respond effectively to changing needs.
  • Flexible in your approach, with a willingness to attend meetings, interventions and academy activities beyond the school day where required.
  • Experienced in supporting the welfare, attendance, behaviour and achievement of children and young people within a school or similar setting.
  • Knowledgeable about safeguarding requirements within education and confident in responding appropriately to concerns and referrals.
  • Experienced in working collaboratively with external agencies and contributing to multi-agency meetings to secure positive outcomes for students.
  • Able to maintain accurate and confidential records using both paper-based and electronic systems, including management information systems.
  • In possession of a full driving licence and access to a vehicle, or willing and able to meet the travel requirements of the role.

Applicants are advised to refer to the full requirements of the role in the attached job description and person specification, prior to submitting an application.
