Job Title: Literacy Lead – English Teacher
Actual Annual Salary: £32,916 - £51,048 (M1 to UPS3) +TLR allowance 2B (£5,873)
Contract Type: Permanent – Full time
The successful candidate will need a personality that is vibrant and engaging and can demonstrate strong leadership skills to develop, lead and enhance classroom practice in literacy throughout the Academy. You will have a positive impact on the educational progress of all students in literacy and reading. This role is an opportunity to lead literacy across the whole academy as well as being an English teacher.
What we are looking for:
We are seeking an ambitious and skilled Literacy Lead to champion a whole‑school approach to reading, writing and communication at BMA. The successful candidate will drive an evidence‑based literacy strategy that raises outcomes and ensures every student can access a challenging, knowledge‑rich curriculum. Working closely with subject leaders and the Senior Leadership Team, you will analyse literacy data, lead high‑quality CPD, model outstanding classroom practice and support colleagues to embed disciplinary literacy across all subjects. You will also coordinate targeted interventions, develop reading culture initiatives. As part of our vibrant, community‑centred academy, you will play a key role in improving life chances for all learners by fostering confidence, independence and a love of reading.
About you:
You will be:
- a qualified teacher or hold an equivalent teaching qualification.
- able to deliver the curriculum in your chosen area and consistently teach high quality lessons across relevant key stages.
- able to meet the needs of learners from key identified groups, including pupil premium, looked after children, SEND and High Attaining students.
- a strong communicator with the ability to embrace change, motivate colleagues and build positive relationships with students, staff and parents.
- able to recognise, value and support the delivery of opportunities which extend beyond the confines of classroom delivery and seek to enrich and add value to the students experience & learning.
- empowered to develop your own expert practice and support the development of others.
- highly competent in all elements of the Teachers’ Standards and your achievements and contribution will be substantial and sustained as an Upper Pay Scale teacher.

About Bristol Metropolitan Academy
Bristol Metropolitan Academy is an over-subscribed secondary school based in Fishponds, Bristol. It is characterised by energy, enthusiasm and a strong sense of community. The years at school are few and precious, and it is important that students at Bristol Met have a strong sense of belonging and a belief in their right and their ability to achieve highly.
Bristol Met was rated “Good” with Outstanding features by Ofsted in 2022. In Summer 2019 the Academy secured attainment that exceeded national average for the first time, with the best results the Academy has ever had.
