Governor

Finance Governor

We are looking for two governors to join our governing body. City Academy Norwich (CAN) is a stand-alone secondary Academy supported by Bohunt Education Trust (BET), a pioneering multi-academy trust where the highest expectations, unparalleled opportunity and highly effective teaching combine to create students who are “game changers.”

City Academy Norwich is a dynamic, nurturing learning community that holds the highest expectations and aspirations for our students and staff. Our ethos is encapsulated by three simple words. Enjoy Respect Achieve.

We expect the governing body to ensure that it meets its responsibilities under the CAN / Bohunt Education Trust scheme of delegation. In summary our governing body:

• implements the Academy and the Trust’s overarching strategy and priorities;

• promotes the delivery and implementation of the Academy and the Trust’s vision and ethos to the academy community;

• provides proactive support and challenge to the Headteacher;

• represents and promotes the Academy in its local community ;

• advises the rest of the CAN Board about local issues (whether within the Academy or the wider community) that may affect the Academy.

Being part of our aspirational Academy comes with the benefit of specialist training and support, from external training providers and from other experienced Chairs within BET.

The average time commitment is about 22 hours per year, although it will vary depending on the needs of the Academy and the role. This includes meetings, background reading and Academy visits. Most Governing Body meetings will take place in the evenings. A Disclosure and Barring Service with section 128 check is required for this role.

A CAN Local Governor acts as a key link between CAN, the Academy, and the Academy’s stakeholders:

• by actively supporting and promoting the work of the Academy in the wider community, and ensuring that the Academy is seen as the heart of that community;

• by knowing CAN’s ethos, vision, policies, and priorities and ensuring that all governing body activity keeps them in mind;

• by supporting the Headteacher of the Academy in the development and implementation of the Academy Improvement Plan strategic priorities and those of other relevant plans, ensuring that the CAN ethos remains at the heart of the Academy community;

• by providing challenging but positive and proactive support to the Headteacher in driving forward academic performance, quality of care and provision;

• by reviewing regularly, the Academy’s performance in relation to the (Key Performance Indicators) KPIs (education and resources) and monitoring the implementation of, and reviewing as appropriate, CAN policies;

• by supporting CAN in delivering the overarching CAN strategy, ensuring resources are applied by the proper use of funds and providing high quality educational provision;

• by agreeing to and following the Governor/Trustee Code of Conduct (and all policies referred to in that Code of Conduct (eg Safeguarding, Diversity and Equality, Communications, Volunteers), the LGB Terms of Reference and Scheme of Delegation at all times;

• by participating in governor panels (e.g. Admissions, Discipline; Permanent Exclusions) as appropriate;

• actively ensures the governing body is aware of the views of parents and the local community;

• actively promotes the Academy at the heart of its local community.

There are no specific skills, or qualifications that need to be met but the following personal attributes must be demonstrated:

• personal enthusiasm and commitment to making a positive difference to children and young people and raising standards;

• self-motivated and resilient;

• clear view of what high standards and performance look like;

• understanding of strategic nature of role;

• commitment to personal development and to undertaking training as appropriate;

• participation in evaluation and review processes.
