Dance Instructor

Working Hours: 21 hours per week, term time only (0.49FTE)

8.30am to 4pm, 3 days per week, including a half hour unpaid break

Ideally Wednesday to Friday

Contract Type: One year fixed term from 1 September 2026 in the first instance

Salary: NJC Scale (K) £24,926 - £26,422 – subject to 1st April 2026 pay award

Actual salary for 0.49FTE, term time only £12,277 - £13,014

We are seeking an energetic and highly skilled Dance Instructor to join our expanding Dance team. Working alongside the Head of Dance, this is an exciting opportunity for a talented dance graduate or practitioner who is passionate about developing young performers and keen to gain experience within a thriving and ambitious school setting. Our Level 3 Performing Arts (Dance) course is equivalent to three A Levels and has grown significantly in recent years, with strong recruitment and an ambitious vision for further expansion. We are looking for a practitioner who can contribute to this momentum.

The successful candidate will:

• Deliver high-quality practical dance sessions at KS4 and Sixth Form

• Lead technique classes across contemporary, jazz, commercial and lyrical styles

• Choreograph confidently for advanced Level 3 performers

• Support students in developing original choreography to a high standard

• Assist with assessing practical performance and choreography against set criteria

• Contribute to performance showcases, competitions and wider enrichment opportunities

This is a practical, performance-focused role within a growing and forward-thinking Dance provision.

We are looking for someone who:

• Has strong technical training and performance experience

• Is confident teaching a range of styles including contemporary, jazz, commercial and lyrical

• Has experience choreographing for group and advanced performers

• Has an understanding of practical assessment and working towards defined criteria

• Is organised, reliable and keen to develop within an educational setting

• Brings energy, creativity and high expectations

Experience working with young people (schools, youth groups, assisting in classes or workshops) is desirable.

The Performing Arts Faculty and Dance Department

The Performing Arts faculty at Commonweal is committed to engaging students across all Key Stages, fostering enjoyment, confidence and a strong sense of achievement through a broad and inclusive curriculum. Students are exposed to a wide range of styles, techniques and performance experiences, supported by strong relationships and a culture that encourages independence and personal responsibility.

Dance is a central and highly valued part of this provision and plays a significant role within the wider Performing Arts offer, particularly at Key Stage 4 and 5 and within our thriving GCSE and Sixth Form. The department delivers a well established and ambitious curriculum, including a large and successful Level 3 Dance course, alongside a rich programme of extra curricular opportunities.

Students regularly take part in performances, showcases and external events throughout the year, supported by visiting professional artists, workshops and trips that enhance their training and industry awareness. The department has a strong culture of creativity, collaboration and high expectations, and students are encouraged to develop both technically and artistically.

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to and play a key part in shaping, a vibrant and extensive dance programme. The successful candidate will be expected to engage fully with the wider life of the department, including rehearsals, performances, trips and enrichment, and to share in the delivery of a dynamic and ambitious extracurricular offer.
