Dear prospective applicant,

Thank you for expressing an interest in this important vacancy at our college.

In the top 12% of schools nationally, Crown Hills Community College blends a 70-year history of inclusive education with an innovative, forward-looking approach to providing a state education like no other to 1,500 students from inner city backgrounds. 2019 saw us record our best results for progress with a score of +0.40.

Ideally, the appointee will possess a proven track record of providing excellent outcomes for students.

Also, the ideal candidate will possess good communication skills and have the personal authority to build strong relationships with students, staff and parents.

Over the past three years the school has changed significantly not only in its performance but in the way it operates. We are not interested in the OFSTED grade or judgement and it is not something that we use to threaten staff with nor do we use it to set policy. We do what is best for the staff and the students underpinned by a set of clear values and we trust that everything else will take care of itself. I would, therefore, urge you to visit us and to look at our website and the video about what it is that we stand for and why you would want to join us.

I want us to be at the forefront of educational excellence because we want to provide the best educational experience possible for the children in our care. This is extremely difficult in a climate of ever-increasing accountability and diminishing resources. However, I sincerely believe that if we lead this community by staying true to our values then it is possible.

I have therefore spent time with staff and exploring what it is we stand for and, after a school-wide consultation, we have decided that ASPIRATION, COMMITMENT and SUCCESS are the three key drivers that will support the development of our pupils.

The Design Technology faculty is made up of 9 teaching staff, 5 are full time and 4 members of staff are on 4-day timetables. The leadership structure for the faculty comprises of one head of Faculty and 2 assistant heads of faculty. We also have a Head of Year (Year 8) and 2 Heads of House within the team. We are friendly, supportive, inclusive and always happy to share our love for our subject with other like-minded individuals.

At CHCC we have a strong provision for Design Technology, with 3 lessons per week at KS3 and4, excellent facilities and class sizes of 22 at KS3 and around 18 at KS4.

We currently offer 8 specialist areas through which we deliver content that covers the KS3 NC requirements for Design Technology, Food and Art and Design. KS3 students rotate through these 8 areas over a 3-yearcarousel journey, with extended 14–16-week projects in each.

We now define our own curriculum in more granular detail through our Threshold Concepts , Curriculum Maps and Unit Overviews. These curriculum details have been defined separately for Design and Food and Nutrition.

At KS4 we offer AQA Food and Nutrition (Food Science was implemented in KS3 to support the more scientific aspects of the NEA like coagulation, emulsification etc). This is a very popular option subject currently with 2 classes of 18 in both Year 10 and 11.

The vacancy has arisen due to maternity leave.

The successful candidate will be given a tutorial role. Crown Hills has a strong commitment to C.P.D. This is an excellent place in which to further your career.

We are very clear that the gender, background, colour, poverty, wealth or social status of a child should have no bearing on how well they perform and staff here work extremely hard in trying to close that gap between the different groups of pupils.

Please read the attached job description and person specification. If you are interested in applying, please fill in the application form available on our website. Please include e-mail addresses of all referees, and e-mail it together with a letter of application (no more than 2 sides of A4, font 12) outlining your skills, qualifications and experience relevant to this post to Jo Amey by Friday 10th September 2021. Ideally, the successful candidate would be available to start as soon as possible.

Should you wish to visit the College please contact Jo Amey.

I look forward to receiving your application and, possibly, meeting you.

Yours sincerely,

Mr F Adam

Principal
