If you are a recent university graduate who is interested in gaining initial classroom experience as a Teaching Assistant, The Elmgreen School wants to hear from you. We are looking to offer graduates an opportunity to gain knowledge of the classroom and their first steps in their journey to become a teacher.

The Elmgreen School believes the most effective way to experience all aspects of school life is to be based in a school environment, learning to teach with expert classroom practitioners. Our school-based Teaching Assistant placements are based in our Additional Educational Needs department and support students in the classroom with various needs. We can offer you invaluable classroom experience to help develop your knowledge and skills ahead of Initial Teacher Training. We expect that many of our graduate Teaching Assistants will go on to complete their Initial Teacher Training through The Elmgreen School.

Key Responsibilities

Support for Students

  • Supervise and provide particular support for students identified on the Special Educational Needs Register, ensuring their safety and access to learning activities
  • Assist with the development and implementation of Educational Health Care Plans / SEN Support Plans and Pastoral Support Plans / Behaviour Plans
  • Establish constructive relationships with students and interact with them according to individual needs

Support for Teachers

  • Create and maintain a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment, in accordance with lesson plans and assist with the display of students’ work
  • Use strategies, in liaison with the teacher, to support students to achieve learning goals
  • Support for the Curriculum
  • Undertake structured and agreed learning activities/teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to students responses
  • Undertake programmes linked to local and national learning strategies, recording achievement and progress

  Support for the School

  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person
  • Be aware of and support difference and ensure all students have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
