SBL Academy is a heavily oversubscribed and successful 11-18 Academy on the edge of Bristol, just north of Keynsham and Bitton. We are seeking to appoint a Leader for Physical Education to start in September 2024. The Curriculum Team Leader for Physical Education will take responsibility for academic courses (level 2 and 3), our core curriculum for all years as well as our school’s extra-curricular sports and activity provision.

We are fortunate to have excellent facilities to help us provide a strong sporting experience for our students. The Physical Education Department has full access to a large sports hall equipped for most activities, a modern and well-appointed fitness room, a spin room and two well-lit, modern gym and dance spaces as well as a bespoke PE classroom. Outdoor facilities include a new astro-turf football pitch and netball courts used for tennis during the summer. We also benefit from our own very pleasant playing fields within walking distance of the school.

The role and responsibilities of this position will include:

  •  Continuing to build an ethos of professionalism and excellence within the staff team and student body.
  •  Leading improvements in outcomes for Academic PE courses as well as our wider curriculum provision.
  •  The efficient management of the curriculum, staffing, scheduling and the overall resources of the department;
  •  Be responsible for the co-ordination of all sports activities for boys and girls throughout the school including staffing and necessary administration;
  •  Holding and managing the budget for Physical Education.

You will bring:

  •  Qualified Teacher Status;
  •  A clear vision on ‘High Quality Physical Education’ in a secondary school context;
  •  Relevant teaching experience in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. Experience in Key Stage 5 academic courses is also highly desirable;
  •  A committed attitude to fully safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people – especially in a PE context;
  •  A commitment to professional development through participation in training and research as necessary for the successful execution of the role.
