Teacher and Head of House

Job Ref: R466 Please quote on all correspondence

Start: September 2024

Salary: MPR3 – UPR3 + TLR 1A

Location: Bedminster Down School (near Bristol)

Contract: Full time

Term: Permanent

Bedminster Down School is looking for an excellent teacher and pastoral leader to join the school as a Head of House. The school is rated as good by Ofsted and we are looking for an enthusiastic and energetic teacher, who is also passionate about providing excellent pastoral care to the young people in one of our four houses. As a Head of House you will work closely with the other Heads of House and Pastoral Support Workers – sharing a large office space and learning from experienced colleagues, with whom you will continuously develop the schools’ pastoral provision. You will also join one of our friendly, hardworking and highly skilled curriculum teams which are always looking to improve. The school operates a two-week timetable, with fifty lessons across the fortnight. As a Head of House you will teach approximately twenty-five hours per fortnight, delivering lessons to KS3 and KS4, across the ability range. Your remaining time will be allocated to discharging your responsibilities as a Head of House.

The ideal candidate would be capable of teaching one of Childcare and Health and Social Care, French, Humanities, Maths or PSHE, however we would genuinely welcome applications from people with any teaching specialism. Whichever curriculum team you join, you will find a team that is well led by one of our excellent curriculum team leaders. You will see that we have worked closely with the other Futura secondary schools to develop our shared curriculum, to share the best resources and to identify the best teaching practice and share this pedagogical knowledge between schools. We have a strong belief in the power of high-quality teaching and learning to change the lives of our students and we have developed highly effective lesson structures and pedagogical approaches which drive progress in every lesson.

The pastoral system is well staffed and resourced. As a Head of House you will be well supported, firstly by a Senior Leadership Team containing a Pastoral Deputy Headteacher and three Assistant Headteachers with discrete responsibilities for safeguarding and attendance, behaviour and school community and progression. You will line manage a non-teaching Pastoral Support Worker who will spend all of their time in school helping you to support the students in your house. Our support staff also boasts discrete attendance and behaviour support teams, each of which has three full-time staff dedicated to supporting our young people. Our Heads of House act as coordinators of support for the students they represent, drawing upon the time and expertise of the staff around them. We empower our middle leaders to lead their areas, and provide the support and guidance for you to develop as a leader; in this post you will be integral in developing the tutor program, supporting your tutor team to build the quality relationships with students on which a positive school culture is based. You will be one of the most visible members of the school community, to staff, students and parents – this truly is a post in which you can have an incredible impact on the lives of hundreds of young people, their families and their community.

In return we offer:

  • A competitive salary
  • A full and varied CPD programme offering teaching and leadership development for our staff
  • An opportunity to work in a supportive team from whom you can learn, develop and grow
  • Wider opportunities to be involved across the Futura Learning Partnership
  • An energised and professional working environment
  • Benefits include; pension scheme, discounted sports centre/gym membership, free wellbeing support & medical cover, free on-site parking and cycle to work scheme
