Job Purpose:

  • To be a key member of the academy’s facilities team, responsible for the general maintenance and development of the fabric and grounds of the academy, to a high standard
  • To provide a safe, secure, clean, warm and stimulating environment for all site users and visitors
  • To promote positively the ethos and objectives of the academy as a welcoming and inclusive community in all contacts with students, parents/carers, colleagues, governors, members of the public and outside agencies
  • To be aware of and comply with appropriate systems and working practices that ensure compliance with all relevant statutory regulations and recognised best practice

Key responsibilities:

  1. Assist in maintenance to a high standard, ensuring the buildings and academy grounds are clean and clear of litter, graffiti, vandalism and reporting any deterioration in academy furniture, equipment and fittings, including as a result of use by hirers
  2. Assist the Facilities Team in responding to emergency alarms and evacuations as set out in the academy Emergency Evacuation Plan
  3. Provide cover for annual leave, sickness, training and deputise in the absence of other members of the Facilities Team
  4. Undertake grounds maintenance duties not covered by the grounds maintenance contract. Including emptying of dustbins, snow and leaf clearance and gritting of paths/ roadways and the maintenance of the equipment provided for such activities
  5. Undertake all health and safety checks and testing in a timely manner, maintain logs as required and follow up issues as necessary - including, for example, fire alarm testing, legionella, emergency lighting, PAT testing, etc
  6. Ensure permits to work are completed and that the asbestos log is checked as required prior to undertaking any work which may affect the fabric of the building
  7. Give access to contractors, oversee activities on site and report any unsafe working practices or security issues to the Facilities Officer or Manager immediately
  8. Be responsible for ensuring the buildings are secured when not occupied and all valuable equipment is secured as necessary
  9. Set and respond to buildings alarms and report malfunctions, without delay, to the relevant organisations. Assist with the general security arrangements, particularly out of normal academy hours
  10. Be responsible for maintenance of refuse and plant areas in a clean and hygienic condition
  11. Be responsible for receipt of deliveries of academy equipment, notifying relevant staff without delay and repositioning on site as required
  12. Be responsible for undertaking repairs of fixtures, fittings, windows, furniture and equipment as instructed and reporting more serious repairs and breakdowns to heating plants, lighting and other major services to the relevant contractors
  13. Wear academy workwear as provided daily and ensure appropriate protective/safety equipment and items are used/worn to undertake duties safely as required
  14. Ensure appropriate tools/equipment are available, maintained and used to carry out caretaking tasks
  15. Maintain constructive and positive working relationships with staff, including temporary caretaking staff, with clear expectations, support and training provided, particularly in relation to health & safety requirements.
  16. Undertake minor repairs (up to handyperson standard) to buildings and surrounds (including repairing windows, decorating, minor plumbing and electrical repairs, etc); decoration; cleaning; movement of furniture and equipment; porterage; assisting with other duties as necessary and as directed by the Facilities Officer or Manager
  17. Maintain supplies and inventories of cleaning materials, caretaking tools and equipment required to undertake duties
  18. Supply consumables to departments as requested and replenish stocks of other items as necessary
  19. Undertake cleaning as required and, in particular, the immediate removal of any body fluid spillages that occur in the building or grounds in compliance with health & safety requirements
  20. Be responsible for maintaining the academy minibuses, including ensuring MOTs are undertaken as necessary and buses are refuelled weekly. Support travel to fixtures/events as necessary

Person Specification - Essential

  • Good literacy, numeracy skills, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to undertake a range of general maintenance, caretaking and cleaning duties out routine maintenance and decorating tasks
  • Able to quickly establish positive working relationships with a wide range of people from within and outside the academy
  • Able to work in an organised and methodical way and plan and prioritise own workload & act on own initiative and manage conflicting demands
  • An understanding of safe working practices and the ability to work within agreed procedures and practices
  • Enthusiasm, energy and commitment
  • A flexible approach to working hours
  • A willingness to undertake additional training, keep up-to-date with changes and developments in good practice
  • Excellent punctuality and professional conduct
  • To undertake a DBS check annually
