About Us

Gordano is a very successful school with high academic standards, a strong and caring pastoral system and an excellent range of extra-curricular opportunities. Ofsted recognised this when they judged us to be outstanding in every category in our last inspection in April 2012, describing lessons as “frequently exciting, challenging and enjoyable, characterised by rapid progress”. That hasn’t changed in recent years, as evidenced by our consistently excellent results.

We believe in the values of community and we hope that our students see Gordano as a place where they belong and are valued and respected. Although we are a large school in numbers, in many ways Gordano feels like a small school where students are known as individuals.

We are proud to be a comprehensive school and value every single young person. We have excellent provision for students with Special Educational Needs & Disabilities and for those who are most academically able. At Gordano there is a close partnership with parents to ensure that we respond to every student’s changing needs in education and personal development.

Our Vision

Pride

We take the development of character and confidence seriously at Gordano School: our approach to learning and the wide variety of enrichments here support our pupils in becoming reflective and independent. Our young people are expected and encouraged to have pride in themselves and this is shown through excellent behaviour and active participation in school life. Our relationships and attitudes are grounded in respect and care for other people.

Achievement

We are ambitious for the success of all pupils. As a comprehensive school, we are committed to enabling every young person to flourish and progress. We will stretch every pupil, support those who face barriers to their learning and seek to remove obstacles which stand in the way of success. We are committed to excellence in teaching and learning and the high standard expected of our whole staff and governing board is evidenced in our exacting self-review at all levels.

Community

As a community school we value highly the sense of belonging and identity which membership of the School and its House system provides. Serving the town of Portishead and its surrounding area, we aim to provide families here with an excellent local school. We believe excellence can only be achieved in partnership so we work with other schools, our parents and families, local government, community organisations and with the businesses of the region to achieve the best opportunities for our pupils and staff.

Working for Us

Situated at the head of the beautiful Gordano Valley but only 7 miles from Bristol, Gordano School enjoys an outstanding local reputation for academic achievement and extra-curricular activity. We are committed to the comprehensive ethos of opportunity for all and focus on excellence in everything that we do. This is a happy school – come and visit us to see what we do and how you could add value.

Our belief is that every single child is gifted and unique. Our aim is to work with individuals to allow them to realise their potential and to help them find avenues to personal success and self-esteem.

We expect a great deal of our students and our staff – mainly that we are all enthusiastic, honest, tolerant and industrious. In return, we offer a tremendous range of opportunities for both, within the classroom and beyond, from age 11 and through into our flourishing sixth form, for teaching and support staff alike.

About Portishead

Portishead is a thriving area, with a current population of approximately 22,000, the new house-building programme in the area will increase this by a further 8,000 people.  With this new influx of residents and a growth rate of 40%, Portishead will shortly be the second largest town in North Somerset.

It is a vibrant and social place to live - there is a sports and leisure complex which was partly funded by the National Lottery as well as funds from the Town Council and North Somerset Council.  It houses a large swimming pool, leisure and play pools, indoor bowls, six badminton courts, a gymnasium, a fun room for toddlers, a cafeteria and a licensed bar. Other sporting facilities in the town include open air tennis courts, a large outdoor swimming-pool, a boating lake, cricket grounds, football and hockey pitches as well as many cycle lanes for those who enjoy getting out and about.
