The Role

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated and experienced Head of Maths commencing January 2026. The successful candidate will be an inspirational teacher with a proven track record of leading students to achieve outstanding results, who embraces innovation and is always looking for the very best practice in teaching. They will play a pivotal role in shaping the curriculum, driving academic excellence and will share the school's vision and the belief that all young people can achieve at high levels.

The successful applicant will be experienced and confident teaching in Key Stages 3 and 4 as well as A Level Maths, and possibly A Level Further Maths. The foundation of all of our teaching at Hoe Valley School lies in the quality development of students' long-term memories, to make them more intelligent and improve the quality of their whole life. Within the Maths department we use self-testing, prior knowledge checks, regular modelling and a cyclical approach to topics to help build this, and resilience, within our students.


CORE RESPONSIBILITIES (IN ADDITION TO THE TEACHERS’ STANDARDS)

 Leading Teaching and Learning

  • To teach Maths at any level within the age range 11-18
  • To design and monitor the delivery of the KS3, KS4 and KS5 curriculum for Maths in the school in terms of long, medium and short term planning
  • To ensure that all students are making good or outstanding progress in Maths and that teaching and learning of Maths across the school is of a high quality
  • To develop (and train other teaching staff where appropriate) a whole school numeracy plan that will be delivered to students daily and integrated into all curriculum subjects
  • To contribute to CPD across the school and share best practice via coaching, sharing planning and resources and following an 'open door' teaching policy
  • To ensure Maths has a high profile across the school through offering vibrant and exciting learning opportunities
  • To support and encourage attendance in additional Maths events such as UKMT and AMSP events
  • To ensure that resources are organised and available to promote a purposeful environment for teaching and learning to take place, integrating ICT where appropriate
  • To ensure that the classroom presents a stimulating environment through the display of student's work and other exemplar materials
  • To extend the curriculum via relevant trips, organising exciting visits from relevant speakers and visitors and leading enrichment programmes
  • To contribute to the extra-curricular and enrichment activities of the school
  • To lead aspects of project led learning which links to the world of work, further and higher education, primary school liaison or the local community
  • To lead intervention programmes during the school holidays, before / after school or during weekends as required
  • To deploy other adults effectively in the classroom, involving them, where appropriate, in the planning and management of student learning

Leading Progress and Attainment

  • To ensure assessment, feedback and monitoring is SMART, accurate and clearly moves students’ learning on
  • To standardise marking with colleagues both within the school and with partner schools
  • To hold colleagues to account via line management meetings, department meetings and by following the school’s Performance Management policy
  • To rigorously analyse student data to inform planning and intervention programmes
  • To lead and attend internal and external meetings as directed
  • To feedback to students and parents / carers in line with the school policy

Leading Behaviour and Safety

  • To collaborate closely with parents to ensure that they are aware of their child's progress, engaged in their development and supporting them in their vision for the future
  • To ensure the safety of all students on and off site
  • To monitor students’ achievement, attendance, uniform, punctuality and behaviour and to promptly address issues in line with the school’s policies

Leading School Improvement

  • To support the school’s marketing and recruitment plan through frequent high quality interactions with feeder primary schools
  • To embody the school’s values both on and off site
  • To contribute to the school’s development plan and to write specific action plans for Maths, Numeracy and other relevant aspects of the SDP
  • To monitor the budgets they are responsible for and ensure value for money at all times
  • To coach and mentor colleagues as appropriate
