History, Government & Politics Teacher

Location: Howell's School, Llandaff

Start date: 1st September 2023

Contract: Full time, permanent

The role

We are looking for a History graduate to teach in lower school, GCSE and A level. The successful applicant will be required to demonstrate high standards of preparation, organisation and marking in the teaching of able, well-motivated students in both History and Government & Politics. It is important that the candidate is prepared to accompany educational visits, including international and residential, and assist with support sessions and clubs. Enthusiasm and competence in the subject should be evidenced by a lively and engaging teaching style and active participation in the extra-curricular activities of the department. The teaching commitment will be full time.

The Department

The History and Government & Politics department is accommodated in four main rooms; two in the Senior School and rooms for A Level students of History and Government & Politics in the College.

The department comprises one full time member of staff and one part-time member of staff. Students achieve excellent examination results at KS4 and 5 and progress to History, Politics, International Relations and Law-related courses every year. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the department’s extra-curricular offer, such as participation in the European Youth Parliament and Amnesty Society. We offer EDUQAS GCSE and WJEC AS and A Level History, along with WJEC AS and A Level Government & Politics. The department has approximately 50 students at KS4 and 20 at KS5 for the 2022-23 academic year. Group sizes go up to 25 at KS3, approximately 20 at KS4 and around 10 at KS5.

In our KS3 teaching, we aim to reinforce and encourage students’ understanding of a wide range of international historical developments during Years 7, 8 and 9, and adapt our curriculum regularly in order to reflect changing debates around historical issues. Through a wide range of creative teaching methods and extra-curricular activities, we hope to develop our students’ ability to evaluate viewpoints and evidence, and encourage their love of History.

About the School

Howell’s School, Llandaff, is one of the oldest girls’ school in Wales, having opened in August 1860. Since then, it has steadily expanded, both in terms of student numbers and physical size. The school now caters for girls from the age of 3 to 16 and girls and boys 16-18. Since 1980 it has been a member of the Girls’ Day School Trust, the largest organisation of independent schools in the UK. Its 26 member schools all have a reputation for consistently high academic standards, superb pastoral support and enviable extra-curricular programmes.

The facilities inside the Victorian building and its more modern extensions are first-class and the opportunities for extracurricular activities, teamwork and confidence-building numerous. Academically, the school provides great added value, with results at both GCSE and A Level regularly greatly exceeding expectations.
