Teaching Assistant

Contract: 30 hours per week. Term time only. Permanent. Part time hours will be considered. 

Start date: Required to start as soon as possible

Salary Range: £18,933-£19,698 pro rata (Grade 14 pts 4-6)


Vacancy details:

To assist in the support and inclusion of children with special educational needs within a mainstream school.

General Responsibilities:

  • To develop knowledge of a range of learning support needs and to develop an understanding of the specific needs of the child/ren to be supported.
  • Taking into account the learning support involved, to aid the child/ren to learn as effectively as possible both in group situations and on his/her own by, for example:

- clarifying and explaining instructions;

- ensuring the child is able to use equipment and materials provided;

- motivating and encouraging the child as required;

- assisting in weaker areas e.g. language, behaviour, reading, spelling, handwriting/presentation etc;

- helping pupils to concentrate on and finish work set;

- meeting physical needs as required whilst encouraging independence;

- liaising with class teacher and SENCO about One Page Profiles

- developing appropriate resources to support the child/ren.

  • To establish a supportive relationship with the child/ren concerned.
  • To encourage acceptance and inclusion of the child with special needs.
  • To develop methods of promoting/reinforcing the child’s self-esteem
  • Develop an understanding of and provide for students’ specific personal needs to ensure a safe learning environment.

Supporting the teacher

  • To assist, with class teacher (and other professionals as appropriate), in the development of a suitable programme of support for child/ren who need support.
  • In conjunction with the class teacher and/or other professionals to develop a system of recording the child’s progress.
  • To contribute to the maintenance of child/ren’s progress records.
  • To participate in the evaluation of the support programme.
  • To provide regular feedback about the child/ren to the teacher.

Supporting the school

  • Where appropriate, to develop a relationship to foster links between home and school.
  • To liaise, advise and consult with other members of the team supporting the child/ren when
  • asked to do so.
  • To contribute to reviews of children’s progress, as appropriate.
  • To attend relevant in-service training.
  • To be aware of school procedures.
  • To be aware of confidential issues linked to home/pupil/teacher/school work and to keep confidences appropriately.

Lunchtime Supervision

  • You will be expected to carry out one lunchtime supervision duty per week for which you will receive a staff duty meal. Any other tasks as directed by the Principal which fall within the scope of the post.
