Hurtwood House is an independent school, specialising in the sixth form; our unique blend of the academic and creative prepares students for university and life beyond.

The school has an outstanding academic record with over 20 subjects being studied at A Level - ISI rated the school as excellent in every category during their last inspection and our results ensure we always feature highly in the league tables for co-educational boarding schools. The other defining feature of Hurtwood House is its creativity. We are a centre of excellence for the performing and creative arts, providing outstanding opportunities for the aspiring actor, singer, artist, fashion designer, composer and film maker both in the A Level courses and in specially arranged and professionally organised activities. These include our Film Academy, Acting and Dance Companies, our concerts and our drama productions.

This culture of creativity, originality and professionalism permeates throughout the school and, because it is important to us that we provide a complete and broad education, we put a great deal of emphasis on personal development, preparing our students for university and, more importantly, the challenges of life beyond.

Life at Hurtwood

A Level teaching, small classes and students who are enthusiastic, willing learners – Hurtwood is an ideal place for the young teacher who wants to develop their subject knowledge and pedagogy in friendly conditions or for the more experienced teacher who wants to join a unique sixth form community, preparing all of its students for life in higher education or professional environments.

We describe ourselves as a stepping stone between school and university; the relationship between staff and students is best thought of as ‘managed independence’. We work in partnership with our students to develop their academic, social and personal skills. Every member of staff is also involved in the boarding communities, emphasising the importance of a holistic education for all.

The students are graded for their attainment and effort in every subject, every week, so that progress can be measured, monitored and encouraged. The grades are the basis of our tutoring system – there are no form periods at Hurtwood, but every tutor has a small tutor group whom they meet individually at least once a week to reflect on last few days and to plan how to make progress in the future.
