Hours: 35 per week, term time only plus INSET days

The Governors are seeking to appoint a well organised, hardworking and enthusiastic individual join our Associate Staff Team supporting the Science Department as Science Technician. The successful applicant will be able to work in a busy environment, be self-motivated and be able to prioritise. Duties will include:

• Providing technical assistance to teachers and students within biology, chemistry and physics lessons 

• Controlling stock; working with the Head of Science to maintain resources

• Promoting awareness of health and safety in science lessons.

• Putting equipment and chemicals into the laboratories prior to class and collecting after.

• General laboratory housekeeping, including hand washing glassware, returning stock to cupboards in the prep room and disposing of waste

Previous experience of working in a similar role would be desirable but is not essential as training can be provided.

The postholder will work within a team of technicians so knowledge and skills transferrable across different subject areas would be welcome.

This is an interesting role that may suit someone looking for a term time only role with flexible working hours. Applications are also invited from candidates who would like to be considered for this role on a part time basis.

Our Science department consists of seven fully equipped, modern laboratories and one demonstration room all based on one floor. There is a large preparation room with a computer/desk area plus chemical stores. We have two fume cupboards, one is portable and used in the demonstration room, the other is fixed in the preparation room.

Islwyn High School is situated near Blackwood in Gwent. The school was purpose built in 2017 comprising a single three storey building. It’s modern design includes state of the art facilities for subjects such as Science and Technology, a full size sports hall, performance hall and music suite, as well as a floodlit 4G sports pitch and fitness suite. IT and audio visual facilities available in all classrooms reflect significant investment in the teaching and learning environment for our pupils.
