Discovery Therapeutic Services is a school led partnership established to meet the speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN), occupational therapy (OT) needs and emotional well-being (SEMH) needs of local children, families, and schools. SLCN, OT and SEMH encompasses a wide range of needs that require different levels and types of provision. Discovery Therapeutic Services has been established to work in harmony with local NHS providers. It is our aim as a service to bridge the gap between what is required by those in need and the services available within the increasingly stretched NHS. Discovery Therapeutic Services is based at Keyham Lodge School in Leicester. We currently work with a group of 23 mainstream primary schools, 2 specialist schools, 1 SEMH Hub, Leicestershire’s Community Paediatric service and private parent commissioners. The Discovery Therapeutic Services team currently includes Speech and Language Therapists, Speech and Language Therapy Assistants, Speech and language Therapy apprentices, undergraduate Loughborough University Psychology students Speech and Language Therapy Assistants, Child Counsellors, Occupational Therapists, an externally sourced CBT practitioner, and a full-time administrative support member of staff. We also work closely with our in-school behaviour specialists as well as our EPIC Educational Psychology colleagues.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Be responsible for assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of treatment / intervention programmes for service users according to professional standards whilst adhering to trust policies and procedures. The post holder will have access to a second opinion from more senior therapists as identified via clinical supervision
- Provide therapy care plans to be carried out by Speech and Language Therapy assistants and/or Learning Support Assistants/Teaching Assistants while retaining overall responsibility for the clients.
- Provide feedback, guidance, advice and training to parents/family members, carers and members of the multidisciplinary team in all aspects of speech, language and communication acquisition
- Foster close working relationships with colleagues and other relevant professionals in maximising the service user’s potential
- Actively engage in own performance management
We are looking for someone who has:
- Registered member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
- Knowledge and understanding of the application of relevant SLT diagnostics, theoretical models, and approaches relevant to service users
- Ability to work autonomously and cooperatively as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
- Experience of working with parents, carers and other professionals
- Effective organisational/planning and decision-making skills
- Ability to communicate complex, sensitive and emotional information using a variety of modes of communication
