Assistant Headteacher

Leadership Scale (L12–L16) – exact range dependent on experience

Required from: September 2026

Guildford County School is seeking to appoint an outstanding and ambitious leader to join our Leadership Team as an Assistant Headteacher. This appointment follows the promotion of a current post holder to Deputy Headship and reflects our commitment to building leadership capacity and succession planning within the school.

The Role

At Guildford County School, Assistant Headteacher roles are appointed before a specific remit is finalised. This allows the Headteacher to deploy leaders flexibly in order to:

• ensure resilience and continuity across key areas of school leadership;

• provide a breadth of leadership experience that supports preparation for future Deputy Headship.

The successful candidate will be a proven middle leader, with experience across more than one area of school life and a clear track record of impact. While it is likely that the initial deployment will include responsibility within Sixth Form leadership, this should not be assumed. Our priority is appointing the right leader, rather than filling a single predefined post.

The Successful Candidate Will:

• be an excellent leader with strong professional credibility;

• have experience of leading and improving provision beyond their own classroom;

• demonstrate strategic thinking and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a senior team;

• show ambition, flexibility and a commitment to ongoing professional development;

• share the school’s values and high expectations for students and staff.

Why Join Guildford County School?

• a strong and experienced Leadership Team;

• a culture that invests in leadership development and progression;

• consistently strong academic outcomes and a positive school climate;

• the opportunity to gain broad leadership experience in preparation for other senior roles.

Closing date: 14 January – we apologise for the short turn around on this role

Interviews: 19 January – provisional
