Llangewydd Junior School is situated on the western outskirts of Bridgend Town and serves the areas of Cefn Glas and Bryntirion. It caters for pupils aged seven to eleven years. The school has a very wide catchment area. A significant number of pupils come from socially and economically disadvantaged homes. 40% of pupils come from outside the school's immediate catchment area. It received an excellent inspection report in the summer term 2013. The inspection team commented that Llangewydd has a very clear vision and an established culture that strives for improvement; the strong and very effective leadership of the headteacher, senior management team and governors provides outstanding opportunities for each individual to develop and flourish; the school reflects carefully on its practices, is receptive to new ideas and consistently seeks new and innovative ways to improve its provision; the school’s self-evaluation arrangements are exemplary and cover all aspects of the school’s work; and information from self-evaluation is used very effectively to develop and prioritise improvement plans with a clear focus on improving pupil outcomes. There are currently 320 pupils on roll. The total number of children on roll has been increasing steadily over the last two years. Most pupils come from the surrounding area, although substantial proportions come from outside the catchment area as a result of parental choice. The annual intake covers the full ability range, although roughly 60% come from socially disadvantaged homes. The school has achieved numerous awards including being accredited as a Thinking School by Exeter University, achieving the 3rd Eco Schools Green Flag award, 2 ICT Marks, the Active Mark for its work in PE and games. It is an Investors in Families school, a Healthy School and a finalist in the School of Excellence for ICT. We have been identified as a Centre of Excellence for Family Learning in Bridgend.
