Adult Community Learning at LSEC is committed to promoting creativity, wellbeing, and lifelong learning through its community general interest programmes. Our Textiles courses are popular and growing in demand, and we are seeking dynamic, inspiring, and creative tutors to join our team.
Courses are delivered at our thriving Greenwich Park Skills Centre and may include sewing, embroidery, fashion upcycling, quilting, and other textile-based crafts. Our learners are adults of mixed abilities and backgrounds, and classes may also include parent-and-child sessions.
Responsibilities Include:
- Deliver well-planned and engaging lessons in a range of textile techniques, including machine and hand sewing, pattern cutting, embroidery, and creative upcycling.
- Develop and maintain Schemes of Work, Learner Journeys, and Lesson Plans aligned with the course themes and learner outcomes.
- Promote a safe, inclusive, and inspiring learning environment that supports creativity and learner progress.
- Ensure health and safety procedures and risk assessments for the classroom and all activities are in place and reviewed regularly.
- Provide training and guidance to learners on the safe use of sewing machines, irons, cutting tools, and other equipment.
- Manage and maintain classroom resources, including fabrics, threads, and consumables, ensuring sufficient stock levels.
- Support learners in developing individual projects and documenting their progress through Individual Learning Plans
- Encourage learners to reflect on their learning and showcase their work through exhibitions, fairs, or displays.
- Provide constructive feedback to learners to support skill development and personal growth.
- Identify and advise learners on progression opportunities, including higher-level courses, qualifications, or community projects.
- Ensure the consistent application of college policies and processes, including attendance, safeguarding, equality, and inclusion.
- Participate in planned CPD activities and maintain professional development in your specialist area.
- Contribute to the promotion of the textiles provision within the community and support recruitment and enrolment activities..
- Participates in learner exhibitions, fairs and displays to showcase and celebrate learner work.
- To encourage and plan progression for learners and to give subject advise on next steps.
- To be consistent in application of policies and processes in place within provision and to ensure learners are clear on expectations in relation to attendance requirements.
- To participate in planned CPD activity and maintain CPD in own area of expertise.
- To attend and complete mandatory and regulatory training : Safeguarding, Prevent, KCSIE, Health Safety, GDPR and other relevant training.
- To attend regular team meetings, to keep up to date with college and team communications via email, to meet with line manager for reviews.
Key Qualifications:
- Possess a qualification in Textiles or a related subject from an accredited college or university.
- Hold a Level 5 teaching qualification (e.g. DTLLS or equivalent).
- Hold a current exhibition record or have demonstrated experience showcasing textile or craft work (desirable).
- Have at least one year of teaching experience, ideally with adult or community learners.
- Ability to teach a wide range of textile techniques to learners of mixed ages and abilities.
- Strong understanding of health and safety practices within a creative workshop environment.
