FULL-TIME TEACHER OF SPORT & PE, TO START SEP 2021 (Hockey Specialism)

Magdalen College School, founded in 1480, is one of the country’s leading independent day schools.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated full-time Teacher of Sport and PE to deliver high quality coaching in our 4 focus sports – rugby, hockey, cricket and tennis. The ability to coach hockey to a high level will be distinctly advantageous. Further details and application instructions are below.

The Role

Magdalen College School is seeking to appoint a hard-working, skilled and motivated individual with the ability to coach all four focus sports – rugby, hockey, cricket and tennis, to a high level. The applicant should have a particular specialism in hockey, having played or coached the sport to a high level. There is keen interest for hockey within the pupil and parent body, which has generated great success in recent years. The role is to start in September 2021. The successful applicant will demonstrate administrative excellence, contribute to both Junior and Senior School sports programmes and work effectively with colleagues in the sports department and wider Senior Common Room.

The Department

The Sports Department is the largest in the school and oversees the provision of all sport across the Junior and Senior School. Heads of Sport manage their own programmes in a way that allows pupils to flourish in a number of sports. They are ably supported by highly qualified Sports Professionals and experienced PE & Games teachers. We are fortunate to have a number of Level 3 and 4 qualified coaches, many of whom have played sport to the highest level. The introduction of greater departmental INSET has proved invaluable in sharing technical knowledge across all sports. Sports staff act as mentors to pupils who are aiming to progress through performance pathways, but also have a focus on increasing the numbers of pupils representing the school at all levels. Sport at MCS has seen sustained improvement and success over the last 10 years: sports teams across focus sports are habitual county champions (both boys and girls), and teams regularly advance far in national competitions. Within hockey the U12-U16 teams consistently qualify from the county rounds to Regional Finals, and senior teams also perform well in their competitions. A few particular highlights are the 1st XI boys’ finishing 4th in the National Plate (2019), the girls 1st XI reaching the last 8 in the South (2019), the U13s winning the Plate at the Regional Finals and a clean sweep of county titles, both in 2017. Elsewhere, there have been National Titles for the tennis teams and further regional success for girls’ hockey, badminton and cricket.

The Candidate

The successful candidate will be a suitably qualified individual, ideally with experience of coaching hockey and at least one of the other focus sports to a high level. The candidate will also be expected to teach practical PE lessons to the Lower and Middle School, bring enthusiasm and expertise to Junior School sessions, as well as contribute positively to the administration of a range of sports.

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented proactive individual to make their mark in our outstanding Sports department.

Safeguarding Statement:
