Head Teachers Welcome

Our vibrant school has stood at the centre of our local community for over one hundred years. We are proud to serve South Wimbledon. It’s dynamic and diverse - just like London. We are lucky to live in the one of the world’s greatest cities and we are keen to connect our children to its cultural riches.

Our school motto is ‘Working hard and caring for each other’. We teach children the value of working hard and succeeding so they can achieve everything that they are capable of - now, in secondary school and in their adult life.

As well as encouraging hard work, we also believe that caring for each other is crucial for the development of our pupils and our school. Helping others to succeed is embedded in everything we do. It informs the way we teach and is at the heart of the way our children learn, both in the classroom and the playground. Understanding others, and seeing the value of helping them flourish, makes life rich and rewarding for everyone.

We understand that children need a rich and varied range of opportunities to learn so we have great relationships within our local community and beyond. We have a long standing partnership with Kings’ College school whose secondary pupils are currently running reading clubs for our pupils. Our pupils make regular Friday afternoon visits to the older residents of Trellis House and, in return, the residents visit the school for special performances. We want the children to participate actively in their local community: to know that they can be agents of change and a force for good. We have a strong link with the Polka Theatre. Our children are frequent visitors, and they run an After School club for us. We also visit Wick Court Farm in Gloucestershire every year, where our pupils get a real first-hand experience of working on a farm and learn where their food comes from.

We hope you will find the information on our website useful but we encourage visits from prospective parents and members of staff. You can make a visit by calling Mrs Jackson or Mrs Sutton at the school office.

I look forward to welcoming you to our school.

Yours sincerely

Our Ethos And Values

Working hard and caring for each other

At Merton Abbey, we want every child to love learning and flourish in their personal development. We also want our children to learn the value of helping others to succeed and achieve.

Values

  • Respect:We demonstrate honesty and integrity in our relationships with others. We act as positive role models in all aspects of our life and relationships. We value everyone’s contribution – their unique opinion. We equip every child with the courage to contribute.
  • Responsibility: We are responsible in our actions to others; in our social skills; in how we use technology and respond to the world around us.
  • Joy: We are determined to inculcate a joy in learning – not merely enjoyment – for the children and the adults who come to our school. We want our children to acquire a life-long love of learning. We are aspirational about each child’s achievements – whatever their starting point. Our children approach learning with a sense of curiosity and fun. They know that the world is their classroom.
  • Inclusion: We are a school for our local community and all local families. We welcome everyone to be a part / have a strong sense of belonging within the community of our school. We are not selective – intentionally or unintentionally.
  • Resilience: We set great store by the importance of teaching children the importance of mistakes, failure and bouncing back after problems. Resilience is the attribute that will help us meet the challenges that life inevitably brings.
