At MIAG (Meeting Individual Aspirations & Goals), our mission is to create provision where learning is individualised, aspirational and inclusive, enabling children and young people to flourish regardless of their starting points or needs.
We are committed to a relational and trauma-informed approach, recognising that many of our learners have experienced barriers to education. We prioritise safety, trust, consistency and positive relationships as the foundation for engagement and success.
All staff share responsibility for ensuring high-quality provision and achieving the best possible outcomes for learners across the school.
Job Purpose
The Construction Lead will be responsible for the development, delivery and management of a vocational construction provision that engages learners and supports them to achieve accredited qualifications (e.g. NOCN or equivalent).
The role will focus on:
- delivering practical, hands-on learning
- developing employability and life skills
- supporting learners with SEND/SEMH needs
- preparing learners for further education, training or employment
The post holder will ensure that the construction provision is safe, structured, purposeful and aligned to learners’ individual needs and EHCP outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Curriculum Delivery (Construction)
- Plan and deliver engaging, practical construction sessions
- Teach a range of basic construction skills (e.g. carpentry, basic building, health & safety)
- Adapt learning to meet the needs of learners with SEND/SEMH
- Support learners to achieve accredited qualifications (e.g. NOCN or equivalent)
- Embed literacy, numeracy and employability skills within the curriculum
Workshop / Learning Environment Management
- Maintain a safe, organised and purposeful workshop environment
- Ensure all tools, equipment and materials are used safely
- Carry out and maintain risk assessments
- Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and school policies
- Monitor and manage stock, tools and resources
Supporting Learners (SEMH / Behaviour)
- Build positive, trusting relationships with learners
- Use a relational and trauma-informed approach
- Support learners to manage behaviour and emotional regulation
- Promote engagement, resilience and independence
- Support learners to re-engage following dysregulation
Assessment and Progress
- Assess learner skills and starting points
- Monitor progress and achievement
- Contribute to evidence for accreditation (e.g. portfolios, practical assessments)
- Record progress using school systems
- Provide feedback to learners and staff
Preparation for Employment
- Develop learners’ understanding of the construction industry
- Promote workplace expectations and behaviours
- Support learners with employability skills (e.g. teamwork, communication, punctuality)
- Contribute to transition planning and next steps
Safeguarding
- Promote and safeguard the welfare of all learners
- Follow safeguarding procedures at all times
- Report concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
- Maintain vigilance, particularly in practical environments
Leadership and Management of Teaching Assistants
- Lead, direct and deploy Teaching Assistants effectively within the classroom
- Ensure Teaching Assistants understand their roles and responsibilities
- Provide clear guidance on supporting learning and behaviour
- Work collaboratively with Teaching Assistants to maximise learner outcomes
Working with Staff and External Partners
- Work collaboratively with teaching staff, SENCO and pastoral team
- Support EHCP outcomes through vocational provision
- Liaise with external providers or employers where appropriate
- Contribute to reviews and meetings
