Hayesfield Girls’ School is seeking to appoint a Senior Science Technician to join as soon as possible

Salary: £28,142-£31,022 per annum pro rata (Grade 5, SCP 11-17)

Actual salary: £25,474-£28,081 per annum

The role:

Hayesfield Girls' School is looking for an experienced and proactive Senior Science Technician to lead our technical support service. This is a key leadership role within the Science Department, responsible for managing a team of technicians and ensuring that our laboratories provide a safe, inspiring, and high-quality environment that encourages students to engage deeply with science.

This is a full-time role during term time only in addition to five INSET days and 2 weeks during the school holidays. We welcome applications from candidates seeking flexible working arrangements and are happy to discuss various working patterns during the interview process.

The key responsibilities are:

  • Team Leadership: Direct and performance manage the technician team, including appraisals, staff deployment, and attendance management.
  • Health & Safety Lead: Act as the departmental lead for COSHH and risk assessments, ensuring strict compliance with all safety legislation and school policies.
  • Technical Support: Oversee the preparation of complex practical resources and provide expert advice and demonstrations to staff and students.
  • Resource Management: Manage the Science budget and stock inventory, ensuring "best value" procurement and high-quality resource development.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Implement a planned service schedule for all laboratory kit, undertaking technical repairs or coordinating specialist external servicing.

Requirements

Essential Requirements

  • Education: Level 2 qualification in a Science subject (GCSE or equivalent) plus GCSE English and Maths.
  • Health and Safety: Up-to-date, comprehensive knowledge of Health and Safety regulations pertaining to science, including COSHH.
  • Technical Skill: Proven experience in laboratory maintenance and basic repair work.
  • Leadership Qualities: Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise a complex workload and use initiative to solve problems.
  • Communication: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build professional relationships with staff, students, and the wider school community.

Desirable Requirements

  • Previous experience in a team leader or supervisory role.
  • A Degree or HND in Science (or Level 3/A Level equivalent).
  • Experience working in a school environment or a professional laboratory.
