Teaching Assistant - Maths 

Required: September 2026 - July 2027

Hours: 37 hours per week, term time only. Fixed term until July 2027

Salary: Grade 4, Scale Point 7 - 10, (full time equivalent £26,403 to £27,694), actual salary £22,684 to £23,794

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join one of the Midsomer Norton Schools Partnership departments to gain a year’s experience working in a secondary school as an assistant teacher. This is a post suitable as a placement year for undergraduate students currently studying Mathematics or a Maths related degree.

As an assistant teacher you will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced teachers in the classroom and learn how to engage students with mathematical concepts and help them develop strong mathematical reasoning and problem solving skills. You will work with individual students and small groups and, as your confidence and expertise grows, there will be opportunities to deliver teaching episodes to whole classes.

As part of the Maths department you will gain valuable insight into the professional duties of a teacher and participate fully in training and development. As part of the wider school community you will have opportunities to gain experience in pastoral work developing students as both academically successful and well adjusted individuals. You will also be able to participate in the wide range of extra-curricular activities offered at our schools.

This role will primarily focus on working directly with the maths department , however there will also be expectations and opportunities to work across other departments during the year. This will allow you to gain valuable experience in broader developing your knowledge and skills across the whole school.

By the end of the year you’ll have gained a thorough understanding of the skills and expertise involved in working in the secondary education sector in the UK. Many of these skills are highly transferable, but you would of course have placed yourself at a significant advantage if you chose to pursue a career in education.

The successful applicant will:

  • Have a passion and enthusiasm for Mathematics
  • Possess good communication skills and be able explain mathematical concepts clearly
  • Have good organisational and time-management skills
  • Be currently undertaking a mathematics related degree and requiring a one year work placement from September 2026 to July 2027
