The Role:

We are looking for a skilled and proactive Maintenance Operative to join our Estates and Facilities team.   In this vital role, you will help ensure the College estate is safe, well‑maintained and fit for purpose by delivering both preventative and reactive maintenance. You will work closely with the Group Estate Maintenance Manager and Facilities Managers to carry out repairs, monitor the condition of the estate and help provide a high‑quality environment for learners, staff and visitors. You will also contribute to wider operational support across the campuses, including during busy periods such as exams and enrolment

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Group Estate Maintenance Manager in delivering the preventative maintenance programme.
  • Respond to reactive maintenance needs and undertake minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry and decorating repairs.
  • Monitor the condition of buildings, furniture and fittings and take proactive action where required.
  • Support Campus Facilities teams with room setups, portering, deliveries and operational requirements during busy periods such as exams and enrolment
  • Assist with sustainability activities including renewables and recycling initiatives, and report incidents, near misses or hazards in line with health and safety procedures

Who You Are:

You are an experienced, hands‑on maintenance professional with practical skills across basic repairs such as plumbing, electrical tasks, decorating and carpentry. You work safely, follow procedures and understand the importance of accurate incident reporting and compliance with health and safety requirements.

You communicate clearly, work well with colleagues across multiple campuses and bring a calm, solution‑focused approach to reactive and planned tasks. Reliable, proactive and committed to delivering a high‑quality service, you uphold safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion and contribute positively to an inclusive college environment.

What We Offer:

  • Pension: New City College provides a career average pension scheme for all staff (TPS or LGPS)
  • Accessibility: All college sites are easily accessible for wheelchair users and via public transport (bus, DLR, or tube).
  • On-Site Facilities: Free access to on-site gym facilities at some campuses and on-site cafes serving subsidised food and drinks.
  • Staff Development: Five CPD (Continuing Professional Development) days per year, with access to industry-standard facilities and a collaborative working environment. Leading to opportunities for career advancement and professional development in a supportive setting.
  • Financial Perks: Interest-free loans for annual travel season tickets. Health cash plan (reimbursement for dental, optical, and therapy treatments) and a completely confidential Employee assistance program.
  • Discounts: Save money on day-to-day expenses, shopping, dining out, DIY, and travel.
