Are you a Maths teacher looking for a better work-life balance? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for a Lecturer in Maths on a maternity cover contract to join our successful Maths department at North Kent Colleges Group.

The role will involve working across our Hadlow and Tonbridge Colleges, delivering Maths up to GCSE Foundation level to learners as part of their vocational programmes.

Our Maths and English department is proud of achieving GCSE Maths and Functional Skills results above the national FE average, alongside high attendance rates. Our success has also been recognised in the Department for Education’s published good practice guidance for English and Maths in Further Education.

The Role:

Where you’ll work: This role is based at our Hadlow and Tonbridge Colleges

Your contract: Fixed-term contract of up to 1 year to cover maternity leave, commencing January / February 2027.

Your hours: 37 hours per week, 52 weeks per annum (1 FTE).

Your pay: £38,049 to £45,445 per annum, dependent on qualifications and experience.

What our English and Maths staff say:

"This is the best teaching role I've had in nearly 20 years. The work-life balance is far better than in secondary education, and the support from colleagues and managers is exceptional."

"I've been made to feel welcome from day one. The shared teaching resources, supportive team and fantastic students make this a great place to work."

"Moving from school to FE has given me a much better work-life balance. Shared planning, manageable marking and the freedom to be creative make a real difference."

"The team is collaborative, supportive and always willing to share ideas. I enjoy coming to work every day."

(Please see more current team testimonials in the appendix).

Why make the move to Further Education?

We have had several teachers move from the primary and secondary phases to the Further Education phase and for any prospective candidates considering this, we have listed some benefits of this transition which you may wish to consider.

Benefits

No tutor group

No duties

No parents evenings

The vast majority of classes have no more than 20 learners

Repeat delivery of lessons with only minor changes based on learner needs and backgrounds, so planning is manageable

Part time opportunities welcomed

Functional Skills learners have up to 3 opportunities to take the exam (with Functional Skills being a subset of the GCSE curriculum)

Greater opportunity for CPD sessions during non teaching weeks

Planning and marking are manageable within the contracted week

Opportunity to take holidays in early July (outside normal school term time)

You’ll still enjoy

Plan and deliver high quality lessons

Annual supportive lesson visits for personal development

Good range of teaching resources available (eg interactive whiteboards, laptops, plenty of learner resources…)

Continuation of the Teacher Pension scheme

Learners complete regular assessments to track progress

A written report for each learner once a year

A few differences

We have a strong focus on attendance as well as progress and achievement

Each learner receives a 3-hour Maths session for approximately 33 weeks

Slightly longer days (start at 8:45am, finish at 5:15pm) but over a shorter delivery time (i.e., teaching starts 2nd week in Sept and teaching ends towards the middle of June)

The majority of the delivery is to learners aged 16+ (the vast majority are 16-18).

Earlier return than schools; always the day before GCSE results in 3rd week in August.
