Numeracy Co-ordinator / Teacher of Mathematics

Start Date: January 2027

Salary: MPS/UPS + TLR2a

The Governing Body of St Joseph’s Catholic School & Sixth Form Centre is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, ambitious and highly effective Numeracy Co-ordinator / Teacher of Mathematics to join our school from January 2027.

This is an exciting opportunity to take on a significant whole-school leadership responsibility, leading the development of numeracy across the curriculum and working with colleagues across all subject areas to ensure that our students develop the mathematical and numerical skills, confidence and fluency they need to succeed.

The successful candidate will be an excellent teacher of Mathematics with high expectations for all students. The ability to teach Mathematics at A-Level is essential, particularly candidates with the expertise and confidence to teach Mechanics. Alongside teaching within the Mathematics Department, they will provide strategic leadership for Numeracy across the whole school, working with Senior Leaders, Heads of Department and classroom teachers to develop a coherent and ambitious approach to numeracy from Key Stage 3 through to Post-16.

The Numeracy Co-ordinator will have the opportunity to shape the next phase of our whole-school approach, ensuring that numeracy is not viewed simply as the responsibility of the Mathematics Department but as an important element of teaching and learning across the curriculum.

The role

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide strategic leadership for Numeracy across the school, developing a clear vision and consistent whole-school approach;
  • Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of the school’s Numeracy strategy;
  • Work collaboratively with Heads of Department and teachers to strengthen the teaching and application of numeracy across different curriculum areas;
  • Identify opportunities for students to apply and develop their numeracy skills meaningfully across subjects;
  • Support colleagues through high-quality resources, guidance, modelling and professional learning;
  • Use assessment and performance information to identify strengths, priorities and groups of students requiring additional support or challenge;
  • Monitor the quality and impact of numeracy provision across the curriculum and contribute to the school’s wider quality assurance processes;
  • Promote high expectations, mathematical confidence and positive attitudes towards numeracy amongst students;
  • Contribute to the continued development of teaching, learning and curriculum provision across the school;
  • Be an active and influential member of the Mathematics Department while working extensively with colleagues across the wider school.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is an excellent and reflective classroom practitioner;
  • Is a Mathematics specialist with strong subject knowledge;
  • Is passionate about improving students’ mathematical understanding and numeracy skills;
  • Has the leadership skills, credibility and enthusiasm to influence practice beyond their own classroom and department;
  • Can inspire, support and work collaboratively with colleagues from a wide range of subject areas;
  • Has high expectations of students’ achievement, progress and attitudes to learning;
  • Is confident in using evidence and assessment information to identify priorities and evaluate impact;
  • Is innovative, organised and able to turn whole-school priorities into effective classroom practice;
  • Believes strongly in the capacity of education to transform the lives and future opportunities of young people.

We can offer:

  • A caring, welcoming school with a strong Catholic ethos;
  • Wonderful students who are at the heart of everything we do;
  • A friendly, committed and supportive staff;
  • A collaborative Mathematics Department;
  • The opportunity to lead an important area of whole-school teaching and learning;
  • Genuine opportunities to work with departments across the school and influence classroom practice;
  • A strong commitment to professional learning and leadership development;
  • A supportive Senior Leadership Team committed to developing staff and recognising excellent practice;
  • The opportunity to teach across the age and ability range in an 11–18 school with a thriving Sixth Form.

Applications are welcomed from highly motivated and ambitious teachers. The post would particularly suit an experienced classroom practitioner who is ready to take on a significant whole-school responsibility, or an existing middle leader looking to broaden their leadership experience and influence across the school.

Applicants are warmly encouraged to visit St Joseph’s and experience our school community before applying. Visits can be arranged by appointment.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to and fully support the Catholic ethos and mission of St Joseph’s Catholic School & Sixth Form Centre. Applicants will be required to complete the CES application form and explain how their experience, skills and aspirations make them suitable for this important whole-school role.

If you are passionate about Mathematics, believe that strong numeracy opens doors for every young person, and are excited by the opportunity to influence teaching and learning across an entire school, we would be delighted to hear from you.
