Our School

Our school’s motto, “Striving for Excellence, Going for Gold,” encapsulates our daily commitment to fostering the best possible achievement among all pupils, regardless of their abilities.

Old Mill is a successful primary school and is proud to be a part of the Symphony Learning Trust. We work closely with other schools within the Trust, ensuring we continue to focus on being the best school we can be.

We are proud to achieve above average pupil outcomes, both in terms of academic achievement and the breadth of our curriculum. We emphasise holistic development, valuing both physical and mental well-being.

At Old Mill, our dedicated staff, alongside supportive parents and an effective governing board, work together to help your child not only enjoy their learning journey at Old Mill but to also reach their full potential.

Visitors always comment on our pupils’ exceptional appetite for learning, their commitment to striving for excellence and how our staff only want the best for pupils in our school. Our love of learning permeates through our entire site which is testament to the dedication, teamwork and professionalism of our staff.

Our Vision

At Old Mill Primary School, we endeavor to provide high quality learning for all our pupils, through being progressive, reflective and always striving to be better.

Our vision for our pupils:

  • To leave Old Mill as passionate and purposeful readers.
  • To achieve the very best that they are capable of.
  • To be able to think within the individual academic discipline of each subject, building the skills of a future generation of historians, mathematicians, scientists and writers.
  • To leave us as independent, confident learners who believe in their own abilities, and are resilient in the face of challenge.
  • To leave us as responsible, well-rounded, polite and respectful citizens who understand that through hard work, they can achieve their potential as individuals or as part of a team in the wider world.

What makes us unique

Forest School

Our pupils are very lucky to engage in hands-on experiences in the natural environment in our much-loved Forest School, throughout their time at Old Mill. Forest School speaks directly to our core value of being ‘child centred’ and provides pupils with inspiring, creative experiences which improve confidence and a sense of well-being through activities involving problem solving, managing risk and  life skills.

Sport

We pride outselves in providing a high quality PE curriulum. All pupils at Old Mill engage in at least 2 hours of PE lessons each week which are supplemented with access to sport at lunchtimes with our Sports Coaches. Pupils experience a range of traditional sport and we are committed to engaging as many pupils as possible in a wide range of competitive and non-competitive sport and as a result, we are always represented in local leagues including football, running, athletics and cricket by many of our talented pupils. Our in-school provision is complemented by a wide range of after school sports such as basketball, gymnastics and tennis.

Music

Pupils have access to a wealth of musical experiences, alongside their classroom based music curriculum. Pupils all sing as an ensemble as a whole school and as a year group in their annual performances for parents and we have visiting peripatetic teachers who offer lessons in violin, cello, drumming, singing and guitar. Pupils can sing in our ever popular choir – performing every year for the local community, school and at the nationally acclaimed ‘Young Voices’.

Outside Space

The grounds at Old Mill are a real asset with space for our children to explore and enjoy nature. Activities including gardening club give our children the opportunity to grow and enjoy both food and flowers and our active ‘Eco Council’ are always on hand to make sure the playground is a clean and tidy space.

Trips and Residentials

Our pupils benefit from experiencing a wide range of trips outside of school and specialist workshops in school to bring learning to life. Older pupils are very lucky to participate in a residential to an outdoor adventure centre where they demonstrate confidence, bravery and resilience when participating in activities such as abseiling, canoeing and climbing.
