The MFL Department at Salesian

The Modern Languages Department at Salesian is dynamic, progressive and has Learning and Teaching at the heart of everything we do. Our student’s study one language, either French or Spanish from Year 7 onwards. We are now a core subject, so a Languages GCSE is a compulsory part of the curriculum. We have more recently been an Option subject and given the comprehensive intake of students we are exceptionally proud of our results: 81% Grades 5-9 and 51% Grades 7-9 in Spanish, 83% Grades 5-9 and 58% grade 7-9 in French, 100% Grades 5-9 Italian. At Key Stage 4 we teach all three languages through Edexcel.

Our aim at KS3 is to ensure students are being prepared for the demands of the new GCSE specification by supporting rigorous progression in grammar, vocabulary, phonics, and translation skills. This presents exciting opportunities for curriculum development moving forwards. We are passionate about constantly evaluating and improving our pedagogy and consider ourselves to be a department that is eager and honoured to drive whole school change. Children are taught in mixed ability sets throughout Key Stage 3 & 4.

Italian, Spanish and French have had a healthy uptake within the A Level which offers superb CPD opportunities for staff wishing to expand their teaching experience. We employ Foreign Language Assistants in both French and Spanish to work with our KS5 pupils at developing their fluency and spoken expression.

We are committed to teacher training and annually accept SCITT trainees to take advantage of our exceptional training and support.

We are extremely proud of our department at Salesian and very much look forward to welcoming a colleague who is as passionate about teaching language as we are and who will bring ideas, energy and positivity to our excellent team.
